Linguistic Variation

1 . Regional Variation Languages can based on where they are spoken. Different regions may have different accents, dialects, or vocabulary. E xample: In Ilocos dialect spoken in the Ilocos norte may sound different from Ilocano spoken in the east.

2. Linguistic and Social Variation Social factor such as age, gender, or social class, can also influence how people speak. E xample: Young people may use different slang terms than older people.

Linguistic change

1 . Traditional View Linguistic change once believed to happen slowly over many generations. Example: Old English evolved into Middle English and then Modern English over centuries.

2. Change in Progress Language are constantly changing, with new words, grammar rules, and pronunciations. E xample: The use of emojis and texting langauge like “LOL” have become commom in modern communication.

3. The Process of Change Linguistic change can happen through borowing words from other languages, changing pronunciation, or shifting grammar rules. Example: The word “selfie” was created through blending “self” and “photograph”.
