Lawn Tennis Presentation By Swarna Mayuri J VI ‘C’

Tennis- Introduction Tennis  is a racket sport that  can  be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). The object of the game is to maneuver the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. Tennis  comes from the French word tenez , meaning "hold!", "receive!" or "take!", it is used as a call from the server to his opponent to indicate that he is about to serve. Who I ntroduced Tennis? In 1873  Major Walter Wingfield  invented a version of Real Tennis that can be played outdoors on a lawn (lawn tennis).

Some General Rules Of Tennis First of all, the rules of tennis are different (although mostly similar) for singles matches and doubles matches. 1)Players cannot hit the ball twice. 2) Players/teams cannot touch the net or posts or cross onto the opponent’s side. 3) If the ball hits or touches the players, that counts as a penalty. 4) The ball must land within the boundary otherwise, the player/team loses a point.

Equipment Racquet  – A racquet has -a handle, a frame, and strings that are bound in a crisscross weaving pattern. Ball  – A tennis ball is white or yellow in color for tournaments, weighing anywhere 56 G rams approx. Net - A net is a set of strings woven into a crisscross pattern. This helps divide the court in 2 equal halves, for the players. The net is 3 feet 6 inches (1.07 metres ) high

Types of matches It is either played with  two players  (singles match), or four players (doubles match). Mixed doubles – Similar to Doubles except this is played with one man and one woman in each team.

Match Format Singles Match Format A singles match is often played to the best of 3 sets, although some men's singles tournaments play to the best of 5. It really all depends on the preferences of the players on the rules of the tournament. Doubles Match Format A doubles match is often played to the best of 5 sets.

Who goes first? You must be wondering who will serve first… Well, flip of coin or spin of the racket, also known as the  toss , determines which player or team serves first. If called correctly, the player or team that did so can choose who serves first. The player/team who did not call it correctly decides which side of the court they want to play on first. What is a rally? The rally consists of the exchange of shots after the serve is made until a player/team makes a mistake and loses the point. Any shot that is hit within bounds is considered good and allows the rally to continue. If you want to learn how to play tennis, you will need to know how to rally consistently.
