Characteristics of Online Journalism
Multimediality One of the unique features of digital journalism is how it uses multiple forms of the online content that are available on the internet. This includes: text, audio, visuals and video. All of these could coexist in the same production and adapted to the audience’s needs. Thus, news can be presented as the conjugation of these segments, giving the news a fresh new-look!
Hypertextuality Instead of providing one single perspective or thought on a specific topic or having to literally explain everything like terminologies for example in an article as it’s the case with traditional media, the hypertextuality offers the possibility of jumping from one text to another, from one idea to another, putting together a network of content that complement each other.
Interactivity The third fundamental feature of digital media journalism is interactivity. It is the most innovative compared to previous forms of media such as the television and radio. In these forms of traditional media, the consumers are occupied as only passive role whereas in online journalism the viewers get to choose which news to watch, which videos play and for how long and managed their exposure time to the news as they wish. Besides, in many cases the audience are capable of expressing their opinions in the comments section that is made available for the readers.
Immediacy The basic concept of immediacy behind it is that it allows for no lag between when information is received or created at a news producer and when the information is passed on to the news consumers.
