POLICIES WITH RESPECT TO WORK ALLOCATION
• Scheduling should be only so long as the system costs less
than the cost of operating without it.
• A very detailed schedule that becomes obsolete because of
emergencies is of little value. 60 to 80 percent adherence
during normal operation, the value of the schedule is real.
• Schedules are laid out in terms of man-hours, half man-day,
man-day or a man-week basis.
• A portion of the available work force is left free for quick
assignment to emergency jobs or other priority work not
anticipated at the time of scheduling.

POLICIES WITH RESPECT TO WORK ALLOCATION
• A weekly schedule with a 2- or 3-day lead time results in good
performance
• Work Requests and feedback: requesting work from the
maintenance department (scheduling centre) should be
formalized and delays or actual time consumed should be
recorded back.
• Coordinating and Dispatching: Schedule should be used as a
guide, and modifications can be made as needed.
• Determination of Priority: In a small plant with one operating
department and a small maintenance organization,
establishment of priorities may amount to casual discussion
between maintenance and production.

Work order form
• WOF is used to gather information on equipment repair
history.
•Describes instructions for maintenance person,
• Provides information such as equipment to be repaired,
condition of equipment, the repair carried out, the time
required to carry out maintenance etc.
•All above information is normally recorded by a mechanic or
supervisor in coded form.

Contractor cost vs. cost of staffing (i.e., type of work, amount of

•Responsibility for Safety:
Although general administration of the safety effort is usually
delegated to a specialist group, the maintenance department is
often the key to success of the program
Not only is it responsible for the safety of its own personnel,
but by definition it also is responsible for providing mechanical
safeguards and for maintaining equipment and services in safe
operating condition
Instrumentation:
• Instrument installation and maintenance theoretically should
be considered in the same light as the addition of any other
equipment
