THE LINK BETWEEN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS) AND SUSTAINABILITY
OHS in Daily Life Progressive lifestyle is characterized by a happy, active health and safe place. A very wealthy and affluent person who has all the riches, comforts and amenities at their disposal but are unhealthy, crippled and unwell, may find himself in acute distress and unworthy of living. This is the importance of health in life. Safety against risks is another area needing top priority. Mistakes or negligence cost heavily in terms of tolls, sufferings, pains, disabilities and it is pragmatic to remain safe and unhurt.
OHS in Daily Life Science and technology in every walk of life, be it private, domestic, industries, roads, rails, navigation and almost all thinkable areas, invariably it demands a responsible and logical approach in all interactions – private, public, occupations, industries, fields, traffic, games, etc. We cannot afford to take leave from safety.
OSHA and Sustainability Employers are only truly sustainable when they ensure the safety, health, and welfare of their workers
OSHA and Sustainability Rooted in the integration of environmental, social, and economic considerations, the sustainability movement has steadily gained power and traction. Business orgs and state governments have been using sustainability as a platform for decision-making and transparency efforts. OSHA is not looking to redefine or reinvent sustainability; occupational safety and health (OSH) is already a component of existing conceptual models.
OSH-Sustainability Connection Sustainability is modeled using three pillars of environment, society, and economy and then dovetailing them into an organization's mission, goals, and practices. To date, the environmental community has effectively leveraged the sustainability movement to advance improvements in environmental outcomes, such as resource usage and emissions reductions, through increased awareness, the establishment of a collective vision, investment in innovations, and promotion of transparency.
OHS and Sustainability Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies are necessary for the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) such as SDG 3: Good health and Wellbeing and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. For example, SDG 3 through, mainly, ensuring that their products are safe for human consumption., does not remain contented with it only. There remains a big gap when it comes to the prevention of injuries and diseases among employees – something that lies within the major responsibilities of all employers.
OHS and Sustainability ILO reports nearly 337 million fatal and non-fatal work accidents and over 160 million occupational diseases are reported every year due to poor occupational safety and health practices. This definitely adds to the burden on healthcare systems around the world, more seriously in developing countries. SDG 8 targets to protect labour rights and promote a safe and secure working environment for all workers; something that can only be attained through the adoption, implementation, and constant review of OSH policies and strategies by both government and private sector players.
How Can OH&S Improve Sustainable Development? Data from the International Labor Organization (ILO) shows close to 7,600 people die daily from work-related diseases and accidents. The goal of the ISO committee is to save more than three million lives of workers annually. The committee comprises occupational health and safety experts. ISO management systems have standards. Every workplace needs to follow these ISO standards.
How Can OH&S Improve Sustainable Development? WHAT IS ISO 45001? ISO 45001 2018 (published in March 2018) . Is a workplace management systems of OH&S (occupational health and safety). The goal of ISO 45001 is to reduce injuries and diseases caused at one’s workplace. It also promotes both the physical and mental health of workers. The pillars of the ISO standards are: International Labor Organization OSH 2001 OHSAS 18001 National standards International Labor Organization conventions and guidelines.
How Can OH&S Improve Sustainable Development? WHAT IS ISO 45001? The ISO 45001 is built upon BS OHSAS 18001. The ISO 45001 maintains the high-level structures used by other ISO standards like ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015. This feature makes it easy for organizations to integrate ISO 45001 easily.
IMPORTANCE OF ISO 45001 IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Both ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 relate to SDGs ISO 45001 management standard focuses on occupational health and safety, ISO 14001 focuses on the environment. Both standards touch on the following essential aspects of sustainable development goals: Clean and affordable energy Reducing environmental impact Developing industry Economic growth and decent work Innovation and infrastructure Accessibility to clean water and sanitation
IMPORTANCE OF ISO 45001 IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Having a productive and safe workplace is the priority of every business. But still, deaths and accidents do occur at workplaces. A committee developed the ISO 45001 standard sets out the elements of a management system regarding the occupational health and safety management system. Intending to create a safer workplace, ISO45001 focuses on the following sustainable development goals: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
