INTRODUCTION Machine Design is creation of new and better machines and improving the existing ones. A new or better machine is one which is more economical in the overall cost of production and operation. In designing it is necessary to have a good knowledge of Mathematics , Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials , Theory of Machines, Workshop Processes and Engineering Drawing . This course applies fundamental knowledge regarding failure prevention to design specific mechanical elements, including: gears; bearings and IC Engine.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF MACHINE DESIGN Adaptive design: A daptation of existing designs . The designer only makes minor alternation or modification in the existing designs of the product. Development design: M odify the existing designs into a new idea by adopting a new material or different method of manufacture . Designer starts from the existing design, but the final product may differ from the original product. New design: This type of design needs lot of research, technical ability and creative thinking .
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS IN MACHINE DESIGN: Type of load and stresses caused by the load . Motion of the parts or kinematics of the machine . Selection of materials . Form and size of the parts . Convenient and economical features . Use of standard parts . Safety of operation . Workshop facilities . Number of machines to be manufactured . Cost of construction etc.
GENERAL PROCEDURE IN MACHINE DESIGN Recognition of need . Synthesis ( Mechanisms ). Analysis of forces . Material selection . Design of elements ( Size and Stresses ). Modification . Detailed drawing . Production.
ANALYSIS Versus SYNTHESIS ANALYSIS Analysis means evaluating the system and seeing if it works properly (its kind of like reverse engineering ) . If given any system, its analysis will show its behavior. Once the concept is designed, to properly understand the performance of the product that was designed as per the engineering requirements. ANALYSIS is just verification. SYNTHESIS Synthesis means making a system based on the specifications that you have . Synthesis is a scheme to generate a possible way the product work. Synthesis: Given a set of technical requirements. It will generate the system that performs as required . It can also be called as concept design. In the design process a number of concepts will be identified and then the best concept is chosen for further development . Engineering design is SYNTHESIS .
FUNDAMENTAL UNITS The measurement of physical quantities is one of the most important operations in engineering. Every quantity is measured in terms of some arbitrary, but internationally accepted units, called fundamental units .
DERIVED UNITS Some units are expressed in terms of other units, which are derived from fundamental units, are known as derived units. Example: the unit of area, velocity, acceleration, pressure, etc.
SYSTEM OF UNITS There are only four systems of units, which are commonly used and universally recognized. These are known as : C.G.S . units (centimeter–gram–second ), F.P.S. units (Foot–pound–second), M.K.S . units( Meter-kilogram-second ), & S.I. units (International System of Units).
