BAR 2443 – BUILDING STRUCTURE 2
additional lecture
STRUCTURAL LAYOUT
DESIGN

Expected
Learning
Outcomes
1. Structural Layout Design
Students will use all the previous
knowledge (lecture & case studies) on
Architecture Structure Design and will
propose structural design strategies and
best practices for their own designs.

Architectural
Structure Layout
An Architectural Structure Layout Design refers to the organized arrangement
of spaces within a building or structure, shaped by both functional and
aesthetic goals. It focuses on defining how different spaces relate to one
another, optimizing user experience, and ensuring that the building serves its
intended purpose effectively. This includes determining the size, shape, and
arrangement of rooms, walls, doors, and circulation paths.

Architectural
Structure Layout
It also takes into account factors like:

Functionality – How spaces interact and flow based on their intended use.
Aesthetics – The visual design of the building, including form, style, and
materials.
Human Experience – Comfort, lighting, air circulation, and how people will feel
in the space.
Space Planning – Dividing the layout into areas for different activities (e.g.,
public vs. private, indoor vs. outdoor).
Zoning and Regulations – Compliance with local codes (e.g., setbacks, fire
safety, accessibility).

-- -
In summary, architectural design prioritizes function, form, and user experience.

STRUCTURAL
LAYOUT
DESIGN

A preliminary sketch of the
spaces in the proposed
building.

Determine what are the
minimum / maximum sizes for
the area.
Schedule of Accommodation
(SOA) will help students to
find out the sizes.
Structural Layout Design

1.From your SOA, quickly draft a bubble
diagram of all levels to see how the
spaces connects.

2.You may also highlight your vertical
accesses on the bubble diagram - lift
cores and stairwells.

3.Lift core must always be surrounded by
shear walls.

4.Also highlight where is your long span or
double volume spaces so that special
structure consideration can be applied.

Structural Layout Design
A bubble diagram with all levels will help visualize vertical
connection of spaces

2. Expansion and Contraction
Managing thermal expansion and contraction,
especially in large spans and varying
environmental conditions.
●Photo of an expansion joint on a bridge or large building,
showing how it allows for movement between sections.
●Thermal imaging of a structure to show heat distribution and
the potential effects of expansion and contraction.
●Modular construction of a long-span roof (e.g., stadium roof)
showing how it’s divided into sections for thermal movement.
●Steel beam with flexible connectors to manage expansion in
long structures.

Add grid, base furniture in area, and DIMENSIONS!
Structural Layout Design

GRID SYSTEMS are helpful to guide your
design.

Highlight the systems & materials you plan to propose in design - add
photos of existing building using the systems to clearly show your
design intention.

3. Load Considerations
Designing for various loads including
dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and
seismic activity.
●Diagram or photo of a structure under different
loads (e.g., dead load, live load, wind load)
showing the forces acting on it.

Responsibly !
it is a life and death matter.
