THE BASICS OF
FORCE AND
MOTION
Science Grade 8

FORCE
Force can make things move,
stop moving, or change the
way they are moving. It can
make an object speed up, slow
down, or remain at rest. It is
the push and pull that results
from an interaction between
objects. For example, when
you push a toy car, you are
using force to make it move.

VECTORS
Vectors are quantities that
have both magnitude and
direction

PUSH FORCE
A push force is an interaction
where you apply a force to an
object in a direction away
from you or another point.
When you push an object,
you're trying to move it by
exerting a force in the
opposite direction

PULL FORCE
A pull force is an interaction
where you apply a force to an
object in a direction towards
you or a specific point. When
you pull an object, you're
trying to move it by exerting a
force in your direction.

GRAVITY
Gravity is a force responsible
for the attraction between
two masses. It gives things
weight and keeps them on the
Earth's surface. Objects are
drawn downward and toward
the Earth's center by the force
of gravity.

DIRECTION
Direction is the line or course
on which the vector is being
directed

WIND
Wind generates
aerodynamic forces that
impact objects as they
move through the
atmosphere. These forces
can either facilitate flight
or create resistance that
opposes motion.

WATER
Water exerts buoyant forces
on submerged objects and
resistance forces on objects
moving through it.The
upward force exerted by
water can be harnessed to
create floating structures
such as boats or docks.

2 TYPES OF FORCE
CONTACT FORCE - occurs when
objects are in direct contact with
each other.
1.
NONCONTACT FORCE - occurs when
there is no direct contact between
objects.
2.

FRICTION
Friction is the force that
resists the motion objects
moving against each other.
