Introduction to Computer Hardware By Nickolas Bragato Understanding the physical components that make a computer work
• Identify the main components of a computer.
• Describe the basic functions of each component. Goals for the Class
What do you think makes a computer work? • Definição: A computer is an electronic device that processes data and performs tasks based on instructions. • A computer is made up of both hardware (physical parts) and software (instructions).
Hardware vs. Software • Hardware: Physical parts of the computer (e.g., keyboard, monitor).
• Software: Programs and systems that make hardware useful. 💡 Analogy:
• Hardware → Human body (brain, hands, eyes).
• Software → Thoughts and knowledge (commands for the body).
Main Computer Components 1. Motherboard – The main circuit board that connects all components. 2. CPU (Central Processing Unit) – The “brain” of the computer, processes instructions. 3. RAM (Random Access Memory) – Temporary storage for active programs. 4. Storage (HDD/SSD) – Permanent storage for data and programs. 5. Power Supply Unit (PSU) – Converts electricity to a usable form for the computer. 6. Input Devices (Keyboard, Mouse, Microphone) – Used to send information into the computer. 7. Output Devices (Monitor, Speakers, Printer) – Display or produce the results of computing.
Questions for Discussion • What happens if one of these components is missing? • Why do we need RAM if we have storage?
Hands-On Activity Using Real Hardware Parts Challenge : W ork in pairs to identify and explain at least two components to a partner.
Quick Quizz What is the function of the CPU? What does RAM do? What’s the difference between HDD and SSD?
Homework (Extra points) Research one extra hardware component (e.g., GPU, cooling system) and explain its function in one paragraph.
