Elements

Element A pure substance made of only one kind of matter (same type of atom).

Periodic Table of Elements The Periodic Table lists all the known elements

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. H Hydrogen

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. O Oxygen

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. N Nitrogen

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. F Fluorine

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. B Boron

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. Eu Europium

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. Cn Copernicium

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. Ti Titanium

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. Ba Barium

Identify the following chemical SYMBOL. Cu Copper

Elements are pure substances that are represented by chemical symbols . Some elements are represented by one letter Can you find elements in your periodic table that are represented by one letter? Others are represented by two letters . Can you find elements in your periodic table that are represented by TWO letters?

Some elements can have ONE letter to represent it. Hydrogen! That’s easy  Sometimes, symbols on the periodic table can be tricky! Elements can sound different than the letter that represents it. Any guesses on what element this is? Like the kind that’s found in bananas!!

Some elements may have TWO letters to represent it. Here is another tricky element symbol! Elements can sound different than the letters that represents it. Any guesses on what element this is? H e l i um! *Notice: 1 st letter is uppercase 2 nd letter is lowercase.

Next slide begins compounds.

Compo u nd A substance whose molecules contain matter from two or more elements Na Cl What do you use this compound for in life?

Two ELEMENTS can chemically combine and create a COMPOUND ! O OX Y GE N 8 16. Sometimes one element can have two letters , so don’t get confused! Hint: each element will have at least one capital letter
