Searching for a job can be challenging. How do you know what job you’re best suited for? How do you write a winning resume and cover letter? Where can you find job leads? What happens when you land an interview? The Job Search Skills course will give you the answers to all these questions, plus a plan to get you a new job. Finding the Right Job Field
Ask yourself the following questions: What skills do I currently have or enjoy using? What industries have I worked in previously or would be interested in working in? How do my current strengths align with the “current job market”? Ex: Self Assessment Tools: Strengths Finder, or Myers Briggs
Setting SMART Goals for Job Hunting
SMART Goals Defined Specific: Target specific roles or industries Measurable: Track applications, networking contacts, and progress Achievable: Set realistic daily or weekly goals Relevant: Ensure goals align with career aspirations Time-bound: Set a timeline for each step of the job search process EX: I am a recent HS graduate that lives in MI with little employment experience. I will apply to Hourly jobs in the fast-food /service industry (cashier or cook) within a 3-10 mile radius of my home. My plan is to call at least 1 employer a day for the next 30 days after submitting an online or in person application, and will track this all via an excel spreadsheet.
Creating a Job Search Action Plan
First 30 Days Action Plan Overview: Week 1: Research & Self-Assessment Ex: Looking up restaurant jobs in 1-10 mile radius of home that are within walking or driving distance Week 2: Resume & Cover Letter Drafting Ex: This can be done via Chat GPT, Michigan Works, or other paid or non paid - resources Week 3: Building & Expanding Your Network Ex: Cold Calling, Emailing, Interacting on Social Media, Word of Mouth (In-Person) Week 4: Applying for Jobs & Follow-ups Ex: Apply X3, In-Person, Online, Via Telephone, Y.A.F.= You always follow up (1 day- 1 Week - 30 days)
Crafting a Winning Resume & Cover Letter
A Winning Resume & Cover Letter should encompass: Highlight skills and accomplishments Tailor each resume to the job description Keep it concise and to the point Cover Letter :Address the hiring manager , recruiter, or stakeholder direct Note: To Whom It May concern works also! Align your skills with the company’s needs
Using Social Networking to Find a Job
You can build a strong profile by: Build a strong LinkedIn Profile Note: This #1 Share industry –related content to build your personal brand Note: You can also blog on LinkedIn or even FB or your own personal website Keep it concise and to the point Engage with potential employers and recruiters online Ex: Especially on LinkedIn and Indeed Follow companies of interest Ex: This could align with your 30 day plan, who do you want to work for?
