Let’s Mark the Boundaries Activity 2
Objectives: Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain ranges ( S10ES-Ia-j-36.1) Determine the scientific basis in dividing the lithospheric plates
Q1. How are earthquakes distributed on the map? Answer: The world’s earthquakes are not randomly distributed over the Earth’s Surface.
Q2. Where are they located? Answer: Some are located near the edges of the continents , some are in the mid-continents , while others are in oceans .
Q3. Where are places with no earthquakes? Answer: The places where there are no earthquakes are large part of the Pacific Ocean , Northernmost Asia , majority of Europe , Eastern part of North and South America and Western Africa .
Q4. Why do you think it is important for us to identify area which are prone to earthquakes? Answer: It is important to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes so that necessary precautions could be done if ever you are living in one of those places.
Q5. How are volcanoes distributed? Answer : Volcanoes are not randomly distributed. Majority of them are found along the edges of some continents.
Q6.Where are they located? Answer: Majority of them are found along the edges of some continents , particularly in the western coast of North and South America and Southeast Asia.
Q7. Based on the map, state a country that is unlikely to experience a volcanic eruption? Answer: Countries that are located in Europe, Eastern part of North and South America, etc.
Q8. Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes around the world? Answer: Earthquake epicenters and volcanoes are both situated at the same locations.
Q9. How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the distribution of earthquake epicenters and volcanoes? Answer: Mountain ranges are found in places where volcanoes and earthquake epicenters are located.
Q10. What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing the Earth’s lithosphere into several plates?
Answer: Geologic activities such as seismicity (occurrence of earthquake), volcanism and mountain formation are the basis of scientists in dividing the Earth’s lithosphere.
Key Concepts: Plates are large pieces of the upper few hundred kilometers of Earth that move as it floats above the mantle.
Key Concepts: The plates are in constant motion. As they interact along their boundary, important geological processes/event take place such as the formation of mountains and volcanoes and occurrence of earthquake.
