About This Presentation

Divergent thinking and engagement work in tandem to yield innovation. Check out some ways in which this happens, and share your own ideas thereabouts. This DEI is alive and well.

Slide Content

Transmuted DEI Three, Six, Four: Divergency, Engagement, Innovation, and More Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 1

D is for DIVERGENCY: What’s that? Creativity, ingenuity Outside -the- boxness Ability (desire!) to find alternatives Going wide to find insights Thinking non-vertically No silos-ness Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 2

DIVERGENCY in education = it’s about learning to think Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 3

Divergency = the basis of creativity 4 What is creativity? The following…and more? Ability to spawn ideas or solutions to enigmas Ability to retrieve existing data & attach seemingly unrelated visions Why is it important? It’s a UNESCO “key future competence” It makes us human and humane How does it develop, intrinsically & extrinsically? Are we born that way? Can it be taught? Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA

Divergent thinking: How to kindle it in others 3 ways Associate, dissect, (re)combine Associate: Activate old and generate new semantic clusters Dissect: Take everything apart that has been generated, bit by bit Recombine: Discover & take advantage of new, alternative connections Cultivate fluency, flexibility, originality Fluency: Let any/all ideas flow Flexibility: Let ideas make new marriages Originality: Let new, odd, unheard-of ideas in Encourage openness, praise imagination, foster free & safe exploration Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 5

Divergency practice: Teach it to yourself! Look at something as if you’d never seen it Imagine new uses of ordinary things Improve a product Explain how… Be “extra-disciplinary”: Imagine artist’s, physicist’s, chef’s view Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 6

DIVERGENCY is not discipline-limited; teach it anywhere ! Novice engineers at Villanova U, PA., must name & define use of odd things Brendan Boyle , of IDEOU, suggests “ idea generation ” exercises, such as these 3: Listing out & sharing back : Choose a topic, e.g., things to do in a bathtub or how driving can be fun Give learners 3 - 5 minutes of heads-down time to list out all possibilities Share back ideas The pencil : Divide group up into pairs & give each a pencil or project an image of a pencil. Prompt ppl to conceive as many questions about the pencil as they can within 30 seconds Remind everyone that questions can be wild & crazy The generative mindset : Start a story among students gathered in a circle, e.g. “I just saw a unicorn driving a Tesla” Each person around the circle must add… Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 7

E is for ENGAGEMENT : Let’s hook up! What it is: Hooking! Using what is known to pique interest in the unknown Making psychological investment, involving the self in the matter When : From the outset, finding out where we are & where to go, together When affect, behavior, and cognition are co-stimulated into motivation How : Ask a qstn , listen to answer, ask another qstn based on that; repeat Acknowledge everyone’s voice; support; collaborate Why : To stimulate, motivate, promote learning Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 8

6 rules of engagement Behavioral : Elicit participation, persistence, and effort Cognitive : Make learning proceed; incite deep involvement Cultural : Profit from & share diverse backgrounds Emotional : Make things feel right, elicit positive affect, belonging Physical : Get that “body English” on Social : Develop sense of shared, interpersonal responsibility Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 9

6 Engaging activities Listen ; don’t simply hear Watch ; don’t simply see Observe ; don’t just watch Feel ; don’t simply touch Savor ; don’t simply taste Reflect ; don’t simply think Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 10

Engagement : Another 6 things to keep in mind How best to invest resources to optimize learning & enhance outcomes? How to address the knowledge-action gap through engagement? How to stay engaged when things are tough all over? How to engage everyone with fun: Each describes self to an alien being How to retain openness: use open-ended Q’s, listen to A’s, repeat Why does engagement matter? Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 11

Divergent thinking entails engagement to yield innovation: Innovate in (at least!) four ways Collaborate : Each idea will diverge from the next; profit and then converge Brainstorm : Create a tornado, a hurricane, or an atmospheric river of ideas Ask questions , and open them up…go beyond the yes-no Implement engagement through engaged creativity Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 12

I is for INNOVATION What ? Constant & continuous search to improve what exists How ? Profiting from creative thoughts When ? When 6 qualities are in force Having a clear purpose Having foresight to conceive cultural shifts Willingness to experiment Keenness to collaborate Motivation to eliminate constraints Ability to bridge vision and execution Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 13

Innovation : 5 more things to know and to do Abandon judgment, all thee who enter here Open everything & everyone to all possibilities without prejudice Develop the intra-personal as well as the interpersonal Be confident and courageous enough to adopt trial-and-error Embrace failure en route to success Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 14

Innovation : Can it be taught? Yes ! Start with an open mindset Enthuse and infuse Listen ; then ask linked questions Reward curiosity Use authentic, real-world events, people, problems Find new, unexpected ways to combine extant things Remember: It’s not just knowledge acquisition; it’s problem-solving Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 15

DEI : Can all these things be taught/learned? Yes! Let’s share ! What “best practices” do you use for all or any of these? Teaching divergency Teaching engagement Teaching innovation Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 16

a new DEI and 3-2-1 What are 3 things you’ve learned here about the new DEI? What are 2 things or ideas that have made you curious? What is 1 thing you’ve learned & now want to use/share? Dr. KA Watson, [email protected], Santiago Canyon College, CA 17
