LIFE OF PI GROUP 2 BY: YANN MARTEL

OVERVIEW Life of Pi tells the fantastical story of Pi Patel, a sixteen-year-old South Indian boy who survives at sea with a tiger for 227 days. Pi, born Piscine Molitor Patel, grows up in the South Indian city of Pondicherry, where his father runs the zoo. A precocious and intelligent boy, by the age of fifteen Pi—Hindu from an early age—has also adopted Christianity and Islam, and considers himself a pious devotee to all three religions. Life of Pi is a two hour movie.

Born in Spain to Canadian diplomat parents, Yann Martel has spent most of his life in Canada, but has traveled throughout his life to numerous countries. Martel worked odd jobs in restaurants and landscaping before becoming a full-time author. YANN MARTEL

PISCINE MOLITOR ‘PI’ PATEL Protagonist and narrator of the story, a young man who embraces Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam LIFE OF PI CHARACTERS RICHARD PARKER Bengal tiger who shares the lifeboat with Pi SANTOSH PATEL Pi’s father, a pragmatic and loving zookeeper GITA PATEL Pi’s mother, a compassionate and supportive figure who encourages Pi’s intellectual curiosity

RAVI PATEL Pi’s older brother, a mischievous and athletic young man LIFE OF PI CHARACTERS FATHER MARTIN The Catholic priest who introduces Pi to Christianity HYENA A violent and opportunistic predator ZEBRA A beautiful and vulnerable creature ORANGE JUICE The orangutan who embodies maternal love and the capoacity for suffering

SUMMARY The film begins with a middle-aged Pi Patel recounting his life story to a writer who is looking for inspiration for a novel. Pi reflects on his early years in Pondicherry, India, where his family owns a zoo. His father, Santosh Patel, is practical and runs the zoo efficiently. Pi’s mother, Gita Patel, is caring, while his older brother, Ravi Patel, teases him. The family decides to sell the zoo animals and emigrate to Canada. They board a Japanese freighter, the Tsimtsum, with the animals they are transporting. During the voyage, Pi, an inquisitive and spiritual teenager, explores various religious and philosophical ideas, despite his family’s skepticism. A violent storm hits the ship, and it capsizes. Pi is thrown into the ocean and manages to find a lifeboat. He discovers that he is not alone: the lifeboat contains a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger. The hyena kills the zebra and the orangutan, leaving only Pi and Richard Parker.

SUMMARY Pi uses his knowledge from the zoo to tame Richard Parker and ensure his survival. He creates a makeshift raft and establishes a routine to keep the tiger at bay. The two form an uneasy truce, with Pi using various techniques to establish dominance and manage his supplies. Throughout their journey, Pi faces numerous challenges, including a lack of food and fresh water. Pi reflects on his beliefs and the nature of existence. He grapples with the harsh realities of his situation and the uncertainty of life. The story explores themes of faith, survival, and the power of storytelling. Pi’s spiritual exploration becomes a central theme as he finds solace in his faith and his relationship with Richard Parker.

SUMMARY After many months at sea, Pi and Richard Parker discover a mysterious island covered in algae. Initially, the island seems like a paradise, but Pi soon realizes it has a dark secret: the island is carnivorous, consuming any living creatures that remain overnight. This discovery forces Pi and Richard Parker to leave and continue their journey. Eventually, Pi and Richard Parker head back out to the sea, finally washing ashore on a Mexican beach. Richard Parker runs off the jungle while Pi was being rescued by the people. He recounts his story to two insurance investigators who are trying to determine the cause of the shipwreck. Pi offers them two versions of his story: one where he survives with the animals and one where he survives alone with humans.

SUMMARY The investigators are left to choose between the two versions of Pi’s story, but they cannot definitively prove which one is true. Pi leaves them—and the audience—with the idea that the story with the tiger might be the better one, highlighting the power of belief and storytelling. The film ends with Pi reflecting on his journey and the significance of the stories we choose to believe.

"Life of Pi" is about finding oneself and understanding one's purpose in life. Pi's morality and spirituality are continuously tested, much like people experience in the real world. The story shows how maintaining strong convictions even in life's most challenging moments can help one survive. MORAL OF THE STORY

The main message in "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel is that life can and will be difficult. However, people must persevere by any means necessary. MORAL OF THE STORY
