Four common types of PLANT tropism PHOTOTROPISM Plants response to LIGHT. -Positive phototropism is growth towards light - Negative phototropism growth away the light GEOTROPISM Plants response to GRAVITY. -Positive geotropism roots growing downward. -Negative geotropism stems growing upward. 4 THIGMOTROPISM Plant response to TOUCH. -Unilateral growth inhibition- side of the plant in contact with object grows slower that the opposite side. -Causes the plant to curl. HYDROTROPISM Plants response to WATER. -Allows roots to optimize water uptake by directing them towards where there is higher water potential. -Abscisic acid is a hormone essential for hydrotropic response. E.g. Arabidopsis.
