What is light beam Light beam is a Firefox add-on that uses interactive visualizations to show you the first and third party sites you interact with on the Web.
Origins of light beam - Light beam begun in July 2011 as a collusion, a personal project by Mozilla software developer atul varma - He created an experimental add-on to visualize browsing behavior and data collection on the web. - In February 2012, Mozilla CEO (Gary Kovacs) introduced the add-on at TED TALK about exposing online tracking. - Later in S eptember Mozilla joined forces with students at Emily Carr university to develop and implement visualization of the add-on. - Finally light beam was launched in 2013
Why Light beam - At Mozilla we believe that everyone should have the tool to make their own decision about their online privacy and who collects data on them - Light beam is one step in larger, concerted effort by Mozilla & its partners to provide web users with greater control and transparency of their own personal data.
Tracking and Privacy Not all tracking is bad, many services rely on user data to provide relevant content and enhance your online experience. Tracking can happen without the user knowledge, and for some that ’ s not ok. It should be you (user) to decide on what browsing data to be shared
SEE WHO’S TRACKING YOU ONLINE
- As you browse, light beam reveals the full depth of web today. - It reveals part that are not transparent to the average user
How light beam works - Download and run the add-on in your Firefox browser. - light beam will create a record of event for every site that you visit and every third part that is stored locally on your browser - it will visually graph these event to highlight the interactions between sites you intentionally visit and 3 rd parties
- Light beam will continue to add to your graph as you browse the web
