Limitations of Classical Mechanics — The Need for Quantum Theory Although classical mechanics successfully explains the motion of macroscopic objects, it fails to describe phenomena occurring at the atomic and subatomic levels. Key limitations include: • Inability to explain blackbody radiation — predicted infinite energy (ultraviolet catastrophe). • Failure to account for the photoelectric effect — could not explain the threshold frequency. • No explanation for discrete atomic spectra — classical theory predicts continuous spectra. • Could not describe the stability of atoms or molecular bonding. These discrepancies led to the development of Quantum Mechanics, providing a framework based on the quantization of energy and probabilistic descriptions of microscopic systems.
