What is a line?
A line is a path of a point moving through
space. It is considered by most to be the most
basic element of art.

KINDS OF
LINES

Different Kinds of Lines
Vertical lines-lines that move up and down
without any slant.

Different Kinds of Lines
Horizontal lines-lines that are parallel to
the horizon

Different Kinds of Lines
Diagonal lines-lines that slant

Different Kinds of Lines
Zigzag lines -lines made from a
combination of diagonal lines

Different Kinds of Lines
Curved lines -lines that change direction
gradually

What is a shape?
An element of art that is a two-dimensional area
that is defined in some way. A shape may have
an outline around it or you may recognize it by its
area.

CATEGORIES
OF SHAPES

Geometric Shapes
Are characterized by simple
rectilinear or curvilinear lines.
They are shapes that generally
have their own names such as
square, circle, and oval.

Organic Shapes
Are characterized by being more
free flowing, natural shapes.
Organic shapes do not have
their own name.

What is a
color?
Comes from the three different
primary and the black and
white. They have three
properties: hue, value, and
intensity Color theory is
defined as a theory because it
cannot be proved.

The Color Wheel of Isaac Newton
The color wheel was
developed by Sir Isaac
Newton by taking the color
spectrum and bending it
into a circle.

R-red
O-orange
Y-yellow
G-green
B-blue
I-indigo
V-violet

TERTIARY COLORS -created by mixing equal parts
of a secondary color and a primary color together.
