Introduction to Linguistic Hedges
In thelinguisticsub-fields of appliedlinguisticsand pragmatics, ahedgeis a word
or phrase used in a sentence to express ambiguity, probability, or indecisiveness
about the remainder of the sentence, rather than full accuracy, certainty, or
decisiveness.
By alinguistic variablewe mean avariablewhose values are words or sentences
in a natural or artificial language. ... In particular, treating Truth as alinguistic
variablewith values such as true, very true, completely true, not very true, untrue,
etc., leads to what is calledfuzzy logic.
Ahedging strategyis a set of measures designed to minimise the risk of adverse
movements in the value of assets or liabilities.Hedging strategiesusually involve
taking an offsetting position for the related asset or liability. Currencyhedgingis
one of the most commonhedging strategies.
