This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of my summer internship experience at Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC), where I gained valuable insights into metro rail operations, project management, and engineering practices. Key sections cover the structure and functioning of the LMRC system, maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and the role of advanced technology in efficient transportation. The presentation concludes with reflections on how this hands-on experience enhanced my technical and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for mechanical engineering and urban transportation projects.

Rajkiya Engineering college, Azamgarh Department of Mechanical Engineering Industrial Training Seminar on “ ROLLING STOCK AND SYSTEMS ” Commenced under LUCKNOW METRO RAIL CORPORATION LIMITED (LMRC) Presented to: - Presented by:- Mr. Pankaj Yadav Rohan Singh Mechanical Engineering, 4 th year Roll No - 1573640028
Contents Introduction Features of Transport Nagar Depot, Lucknow Rolling stock Machinery and plant Bogie and wheels Brakes and Pneumatics Door system Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning
1. Introduction The Lucknow Metro is a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) being constructed to provide the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh with an environment friendly atmosphere. The commencement of civil works started on 27 September 2014. The growing population and huge traffic has called for the transformation of private modes of conveyance to public transport. Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation Limited (LMRC) is working on this project which will be an alternative mode of transport since approximately 94% of the city’s registered vehicles are private. The metro project is the most expensive public transport system in the state of Uttar Pradesh, costing approx. ₹6,928 crore (US$1 billion) in phase 1 of construction.
2. Features of Transport Nagar Depot, Lucknow Workplace for all minor schedules, overhauls and repairs. Inspection Bays for day to day maintenance Power Supply Arrangement- Traction and E&M system for North-South line. Central Control Centre for operation of complete Metro Operation. Centre of Excellence – a training school Software Development Centre
3. Rolling stock Rolling stock is the department where all the work from pre-planning to assembly and maintenance of metro train is done. This department of the depot is responsible for investigation, modification, report preparation, tool and spare management and scheduled maintenance of the train.
3.1 R olling Stock Sections and Major Job Assignments Workshop Sub Sections Major Job Assignments Brakes and Pneumatics Section Maintenance and overhauling of pneumatic equipment's (AGTU, Brakes, Compressor) Electrical Section Maintenance of electrical equipment's ( Main Transformer, Converter/Inverter) Electronics Section Maintenance of electronics equipment's (Controlling cards) Bogie Section Maintenance and overhauling of bogie equipment's HVAC section Maintenance of HVAC equipment's (Heating Ventilation Air conditioning Unit) Door Section Maintenance of door equipment's (Train Doors)
3.2 Train Performance Feature Maximum design speed- 90 kmph and operational speed- 80 kmph. Energy efficient, reliable with better comfort to passengers in terms of riding quality, lower-noise level and environment friendly. Trains to run in Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode which also ensures that the train achieves timely, accurate and smooth station stops or stopping ahead of a restrictive point. CCTV images inside trains to be displayed to Train Driver as well as at centralised Security Control Room.
4. Machinery and Plant Many important machines and transportation vehicles works in the rolling stock and systems which makes the working of plant smooth and efficient. 4.1 Road cum Rail Vehicle (RRV 1619) RRV can move on road as well as on rails as per our requirement. The vehicle is used to carry rescue equipment. In case of derailment or any accident occurs, we can approach near the site with all the equipment and manpower at the earliest to reduce downtime.
4.2 R e-railing Equipment’s Container The re-railing and rescue equipment is placed inside container installed on Truck. This container is a special type of design for every equipment is securely stored in its specific compartment and can be reached and unloaded easily from outside container after opening shutter.
5. Bogie and Wheels 5.1 Bogie Functions of bogie - Accelerate and brake the train. Allow the coach to move on curve without excess lateral force on wheel. Provide feasibility of two stage suspension. Provide space for mounting of equipment. Provide redundancy in maintenance.
Wheel Description- Wheel has conical geometry, which is the primary means of keeping the train motion aligned with track. Wheel has a flange on one side to keep the wheels running on the rail and prevent from derailment. 5.2 Wheels
6. Brakes and Pneumatics 6.1 Pneumatic System Pneumatic System is an integrated system which deals with the generation of compressed air to supply it up to the end point. The complete Pneumatic system includes: Main Air Supply Circuit Braking circuit Pantograph and VCB circuit Air Suspension and Load detection Circuit Horn
6.2 Braking System The basic principle of air brake system is to feed air pressure to braked cylinders whenever brake application is required. The pressure in brake cylinder causes brake piston to move out which causes movement of brake shoe or brake block to press against the wheel tread or wheel disc. When brake are released, the air pressure in brake cylinder is released & spring force in brake cylinder moves piston back to its original position releasing the brake.
6.3 Regenerative Braking When a train is in motion , it has energy stored as Kinetic Energy. During movement of the train it has momentum. For braking this train, the momentum has to be reduced. Kinetic energy of the train also has to be dissipated. Therefore for braking this train and to recover this energy, method of regenerative braking is employed. During braking, the electric connection of motors is changed such that motor instead of working as ‘motor’ starts acting as ‘generator’.
7. Door System Door System in Metro is extremely important because it is a safety related function. It has two major safety related functions It should not open when the train is in motion. At station it should not cause any injury when there is any obstruction. Types of doors- Passenger door Partition door Detrainment door
8. Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning HVAC system controls the indoor environment (temperature, humidity, air flow and air filtering). Mechanical intervention to condition the air to the preferred temperature and relative humidity. Vapour Compression cycle is used in it.
