Introduction : Published: 1854 Genre: Novel Subject: Social commentary, criticism of the Industrial Revolution Setting: Coketown, England, during the Industrial Revolution.
Born: February 7, 1812, in Landport, England Died : June 9, 1870, in Gad's Hill Place, England Occupation : Novelist, journalist, social critic Known for: Writing popular novels that exposed the social and economic injustices of Victorian England, such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and A Tale of Two Cities. ( Collins) About Charles Dickens:
Louisa is a character in the novel. She faces challenges in expressing herself. She struggles with emotional confusion. Her character is introduced through her interactions with her father. Lo uisa:
Lo uisa’ Suppression : Initial Repression: Louisa as a character who lacks self-expression and emotional confusion. Louisa's lexical choices, especially in her speech with her father, reflect her emotional state and inability to express herself. Louisa has trouble expressing herself. She experiences emotional confusion. This is evident in her word choices, especially when talking to her father in the circus. (Makhloof)
Gradgrind and Louisa both undergo development. Gradgrind's speech with Louisa in Chapter 15 shows a shift in his communication style from directive to persuasive. Gradgrind uses emotionally connecting language to discuss Bounderby's marriage proposal with Louisa. Louisa's inability to express herself and emotional loss are evident in her speech. Gradgrind's dynamicity is seen in his inclination towards using persuasive language instead of directive language. (Makhloof) The Transformation of Gradgrind and Louisa:
Louisa's Awakening: A Shift Towards Empowerment: Louisa's marriage to Bounderby is unsuccessful, and her marital home resembles her father's in its strict adherence to facts. Loveless marriage with Bounderby makes Louisa susceptible to Mr. Harthouse's seduction. Louisa and Harthouse decide to flee together, but Louisa's sound reasoning leads her to return to her father's house for protection. Both Louisa and her father undergo significant change. (Makhloof)
Conclusion: "In a nutshell, we can say that Louisa's story shows how she went from being controlled and unable to express herself to finding her own identity. At first, her father's strict teachings and lack of emotion held her back. But through her interactions with her brother and her growing ability to express herself, she discovered her own potential. Louisa's journey reminds us that even in tough situations, people can find their way to freedom and self-discovery."
