Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fabric that is commonly used a
s a substitute for cotton or silk. This fabric is a form of ra
yon, and it is composed primarily of cellulose derived fro
m wood.
At American Enka, lyocell fabric only made it through the
pilot phase of development before the project was aban
doned. It wasn't until the 1980s that a British company c
alled CourtauldsFibres picked up the pieces and created
a new fabric called Tencel based on lyocell research. The
se two fabrics are chemically identical, and the terms Te
ncel and lyocell can be used interchangeably.
What is Lyocell
1.Moisture Regain: 11.5%
2.Tenacity (cN/tex) : a. Dry: 40-42
b. Wet: 34-38
3.Deformation modulus: (Gpa)
a.Dry:8-10
b. Wet: 3-4.5
4.Presentationofstrength(%):
a. loop: 30-40
b. wet: 60-80
5. Loop strength (cN/Tex): -19
6. Elangation(%):
a. Dry: 11-16

Lyocell vs Cotton
Aspect Lyocell Cotton
Softness
Exceptionally soft and smooth from day one
.
Soft and comfortable, but may not
be as smooth.
Moisture-Wicking
Excellent moisture-wicking properties, keeping
dry.
Good absorbency but may not wick
moisture as efficiently.
Breathability
Highly breathable, suitable for hot and humid c
limates.
Highly breathable and comfortable
in various conditions.
Environmental Impact
Sustainable sourcing and closed-loop productio
n processes reduce environmental impact.
Resource-intensive cultivation but s
ustainable practices like organic co
tton exist
Durability Durable but may be prone to pilling over time.
Long-lasting and able to resist repe
ated washing.
Cost
Can be relatively expensive due to sustainable p
roduction.
Generally more affordable and wid
ely available.
Maintenance Prone to wrinkling; may require ironing.
May shrink if exposed to high heat
during washing/drying
Biodegradability
Biodegradable and decomposes naturally
.
Biodegradable and eco-friendly
Allergenic Properties
Hypoallergenic, less likely to cause allergic reac
tions.
Generally hypoallergenic and suita
ble for sensitive skin.
Lyocell vs Viscose
Parameters of Comparison Lyocell Viscose
Definition
Viscose is a synthetic fabric use
d as the primary substitute for
natural Silk
Viscose is not a sound absorbe
nt
Absorbent properties
Lyocell has high absorbing pro
perties and is used as a chemic
al absorbent
Lyocell is used as a chemical ab
sorbent, and hence it finds appl
ication in healthcare
Texture
Lyocell is a soft material, very si
milar to cotton in appearance a
nd touch
Viscose resembles Nylon in its t
exture
Environment friendly
Lyocell is more environment fri
endly
Viscose is not environment frie
ndly
Applications
Viscose is mainly used for maki
ng garments in textile industrie
s
Viscose is mainly used for maki
ng garments in the textile indu
stries.
Lyocell vs Polyester
Aspect Lyocell Polyester
Composition Made from plant-based fibers
Fully synthetic, petrochemical o
rigin
Eco-Friendliness Biodegradable and eco-friendly
Not biodegradable, contributes
to microplastic pollution
Softness Very soft and smooth Less soft, can feel synthetic
Breathability Highly breathable Less breathable, retains heat
Moisture Absorption Excellent moisture absorption Poor moisture absorption
Wrinkle Resistance Wrinkles less than polyester Prone to wrinkles
Durability Durable, but may weaken when wet
Durable, resistant to wear and t
ear

Apparel, upholstery, outdoor ge
ar
Lyocell vs Modal
Aspect Lyocell Modal
Softness
Luxuriously soft, smoot
h, and gentle
Silky smooth and excep
tionally supple
Comfort
Provides a luxurious an
d comforting feel
Offers a comforting an
d soothing sensation
Elegance
Combines comfort with
an elegant touch
Balances comfort with
a refined appearance
Lyocell vs Silk
Aspect Lyocell (Tencel) Silk
Fabric Origin
Derived from wood pulp (euc
alyptus)
Derived from silkworm cocoo
ns
Environmental Impact
More sustainable (closed-loo
p production, renewable woo
d sources)
Less sustainable (requires silk
worm harvesting)
Texture and Comfort Soft, smooth, and cool Luxurious and smooth
