At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to do the following: Analyze the distinct characteristics of significant folk dance forms from selected Asian countries and explain how these characteristics are applied in both traditional and emerging dance practices. Appreciate the cultural significance of folk dance forms in Asia by reflecting on how these dances express the values and traditions of their respective communities. East Asian Folk Dances China 11 The Dragon Dance is one of the most famous and iconic Chinese folk dances, traditionally performed during the Lunar New Year celebrations to bring good luck and prosperity.
Similarly, the Lion Dance is performed to bring good fortune and drive away evil spirits. This dance involves two performers inside a lion costume, one manipulating the head and the other the body, moving in harmony to mimic a lion's movements. Another significant traditional dance is the Yangge Dance , commonly performed in northern China. It is a form of rural folk dance associated with the harvest festival and involves lively and rhythmic movements. 12 Lion and Yangge Dances
Japan 13 Awa Odori, originating from Tokushima Prefecture, is another famous traditional dance held during the Obon festival. The dance is characterized by lively and energetic movements, with dancers wearing distinctive straw hats and yukata.
Bon Odori is one of Japan's most well-known folk dances. It is performed during the Obon festival, a Buddhist event for commemorating ancestors. The dance involves a series of simple yet graceful movements in a circular pattern around a raised platform called a yagura. Noh Mai is a classical Japanese dance that is an integral part of Noh theatre, one of Japan's oldest performing arts. Noh Mai involves slow, deliberate movements and is performed by actors wearing elaborate costumes and masks. Buchaechum, also known as the fan dance, is one of Korea's most iconic traditional dances. It is performed by female dancers in hanbok (traditional Korean dress), each holding a pair of large, brightly colored fans. Talchum is a traditional mask dance-drama that combines dance, music, and storytelling. Performers wear masks representing various characters and engage in satirical and humorous skits that often critique social issues and human follies. Another significant folk dance is the Ganggangsullae, a circle dance performed by women under the full moon during traditional Korean holidays such as Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). Ssireum, a traditional Korean wrestling dance, is also noteworthy. South Asian Folk Dances India 17 Bhangra, originating from Punjab, is one of India's most energetic and popular folk dances. Traditionally performed during the harvest festival of Baisakhi, Bhangra involves vigorous movements and lively beats of the dhol (drum).
Garba from Gujarat is a graceful and rhythmic dance performed primarily during the Navratri festival. Participants form circles and dance to the beat of dhol and claps, with intricate footwork and twirls. Women wear chaniya choli and men don kediyu, with vibrant colors and mirror work. Ghoomar, a traditional dance of Rajasthan, is performed by women during auspicious occasions. Dancers move in circles, gracefully swirling their ghagras (long skirts), creating a mesmerizing effect. 18 Lion and Yangge Dances
Kathakali, a dance drama from Kerala, is known for its elaborate costumes and expressive makeup. Pakistan 20 Khattak Dance from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a traditional dance of the Pashtun tribes. Named after the Khattak tribe, the dance is performed by men wielding swords, demonstrating their martial prowess and agility.
From the southern province of Sindh comes the Ho Jamalo, a lively folk dance to celebrate victories and joyous occasions. Dancers, both men and women, form circles or lines and move to the rhythm of traditional Sindhi music. The dance is simple yet energetic, symbolizing unity and communal harmony​. Attan is the national dance of Afghanistan and is also popular among the Pashtun communities in Pakistan. It is performed by men and women in a circular formation, gradually increasing the tempo and complexity of movements. Attan is integral to Pashtun weddings and festive celebrations, embodying endurance, grace, and coordination​. 21 Pakistan
In the Balochistan province, the Chap dance is a significant cultural expression. Men form lines or circles and perform synchronized steps to the beat of drums and the sound of the surnai (a type of oboe). Jhoomar, performed by the Saraiki people of southern Punjab, is a slow and graceful dance typically performed by women. It involves gentle swaying and intricate hand movements accompanied by the melody of traditional Saraiki songs. Kara Jorga is one of Kazakhstan's most iconic traditional dances. It is performed by both men and women and is known for its lively and rhythmic movements. The dance involves intricate steps, jumps, and turns, often performed in a circle or a line. Dancers wear traditional Kazakh attire, including the shapan (a long robe) and the takiya (a skullcap), adorned with colorful patterns and embroidery. The Kyl-Kobyz Dance is another traditional dance that pays homage to the kyl-kobyz, a traditional Kazakh string instrument. Women often perform this dance and involves graceful, flowing movements that mimic the sounds and rhythms of the instrument. Iran 28 Qashqai dance, performed by the Qashqai nomads of southern Iran, is another captivating traditional dance. Dynamic movements characterize this dance, and it is often performed during weddings and cultural festivals.
Bandari dance, originating from the southern coastal regions of Iran, particularly the Persian Gulf, is one of the most lively and vibrant folk dances. This dance reflects the region's seafaring and fishing lifestyle. In the Kurdish regions of western Iran, the Kurdish dance is a significant cultural expression. These dances are usually performed in a circle, with dancers holding hands and moving synchronously.
