1) Shirk (associating partners with Allah) Greatest sin; unforgivable if one dies without repentance. Qur’an 4:48 – “Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.” 2) Murder / killing the innocent Qur’an 5:32 – “Whoever kills a soul … it is as if he has slain all mankind.”
3) Disobedience to parents Mentioned with shirk. Qur’an 17:23 – “Do not say to them ‘ uff ’ nor repel them, but speak to them with honour .” 4) Stealing Serious violation of others’ rights. Ṣaḥīḥ al- Bukhārī – punishment is prescribed in Sharīʿah for proven theft.

Intoxicants … are abominations of Satan’s handiwork.” 6) Adultery / fornication ( Zinā ) Qur’an 17:32 – “Do not approach fornication. It is ever an abomination and an evil way.” 7) False testimony (lying under oath) Prophet ﷺ warned: “Shall I not tell you the greatest of sins? … bearing false witness.” ( Ṣaḥīḥ al- Bukhārī , Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim).
Implications of Major Sins 1) Shirk (associating partners with Allah) Worldly: Confusion in purpose, false worship, straying from Islam. Spiritual: Destroys īmān . Hereafter: Unforgivable if not repented; eternal Hell. (Qur’an 4:48) 2) Murder / killing the innocent Worldly: Blood feuds, loss of safety in society, legal punishment. Spiritual: Hardening of the heart. Hereafter: Enormous sin; threatened with Hell. (Qur’an 5:32)

Minor Sins Definition: Lesser sins that do not reach the level of major sins, but if repeated and ignored, they pile up and may become major. Evidence: Qur’an 4:31 – “If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins…”
Minor sins : 1. Lying (without serious harm) Still sinful, but not equal to false testimony in court. 2) Gossip ( nameemah ) and backbiting Forbidden, harms relationships. Qur’an 49:12 – “Do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?”
3) Wasting time / neglecting sunnah acts Example: not praying sunnah prayers, excessive entertainment. 4) Small acts of disrespect (rolling eyes at parents, bad tone). 5) Breaking minor promises Not equal to betrayal in contracts, but still sinful.
6) Impure speech / foul language Prophet ﷺ said: “The believer is not one who curses, nor one who is obscene.” (Sunan al- Tirmidhī ).
Implications of Minor Sins 1) Lying (ordinary, not in court) Worldly: Loss of trust. Spiritual: Weakens īmān ; leads to hypocrisy if habitual. Hereafter: Accountable, but forgiven through repentance/good deeds. 2) Gossip & backbiting Worldly: Destroys friendships, spreads hate. Spiritual: Eats away good deeds. (Qur’an 49:12) Hereafter: The one wronged will take from your good deeds.

Hereafter: Deeds reduced in value.
5) Breaking small promises Worldly: People won’t trust you. Spiritual: One of the signs of hypocrisy if habitual. ( Bukhārī , Muslim) Hereafter: Accountable but forgiven if tawbah is made. 6) Impure / foul speech Worldly: People avoid you. Spiritual: Dirty heart; angels dislike foul words. Hereafter: Punishment unless forgiven.
Sins don’t just affect our relationship with Allah, but also with people and with ourselves.
1. Sins Against Allah ( ḥuqūq Allāh – the rights of Allah) What it means: These are sins where we fail to give Allah His due right of worship and obedience. Allah created us to worship Him ( Qur’an 51:56 ), so neglecting His commands is a direct violation of His right over us. Examples: Shirk (associating partners with Allah): The gravest sin. Worshipping idols, believing in fortune-tellers, or putting trust in other than Allah. Neglecting prayer ( ṣalāh ): Deliberately missing or abandoning the five daily prayers. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Between a man and shirk and disbelief is abandoning the prayer.” ( Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim). Not fasting in Ramaḍān without excuse. Mocking or rejecting the Qur’an and Sunnah. Implications: Worldly: A person loses barakah (blessings) in their life. Spiritual: The heart becomes hard, īmān becomes weak. Hereafter: These sins are only forgiven through sincere tawbah (repentance). Shirk, if not repented from, is unforgivable and leads to eternal Hell.
2. Sins Against Others ( ḥuqūq al- ʿibād – the rights of people) These sins involve harming or taking away the rights of other human beings (or even animals). Unlike sins against Allah, these cannot be forgiven by tawbah alone — the person must also return the right or seek forgiveness from the one wronged. Examples: Stealing or cheating: Taking others’ money or property unjustly. Backbiting and slander: Speaking badly about someone behind their back. Disrespecting parents, teachers, or elders. Oppression or bullying: Hurting others physically or emotionally. Breaking promises or betraying trust. Implications: Worldly: Broken families, hatred, mistrust in society. Spiritual: Good deeds are at risk — Prophet ﷺ said: “The bankrupt of my Ummah is the one who comes on the Day of Judgment with prayers and fasting and zakah , but he insulted this person, hit that one, consumed another’s wealth… So his good deeds will be taken and given to them. If his deeds run out, their sins will be thrown onto him, and he will be cast into Hellfire.” ( Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim). Hereafter: On the Day of Judgment, Allah will take justice between people before anyone enters Paradise.
3. Sins Against Oneself ( ẓulm al- nafs – wronging oneself) These are sins that harm our own soul and body. Even if they don’t directly hurt others, they weaken our īmān and waste the life Allah gave us. Examples: Neglecting worship: Skipping prayers, ignoring Qur’an, abandoning good deeds. Addictions: Drugs, alcohol, excessive gaming, pornography. Self-harm: Hurting the body Allah entrusted us with. Laziness and procrastination: Wasting time instead of using it for good. Sinning in private: Thinking “nobody sees me” but forgetting Allah always sees. Implications: Worldly: Anxiety, depression, broken self-discipline, unhealthy lifestyle. Spiritual: The soul becomes stained with sin, making tawbah harder over time. Hereafter: The person will face regret for wasting their life. Qur’an Evidence: The duʿāʾ of Prophet Ādam ( ʿalayhi al- salām ) after his mistake: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.” (Qur’an 7:23). This verse teaches that even prophets recognised their mistakes and turned back to Allah in humility.
Sins against Allah: can be forgiven by sincere tawbah . Sins against people: require tawbah and returning rights/asking forgiveness. Sins against ourselves: require tawbah and positive change in lifestyle .
How to Avoid Sins
1. Avoiding Sins Against Allah ( ḥuqūq Allāh ) These are sins where we neglect Allah’s rights (e.g., shirk, abandoning ṣalāh ). Practical Tips: Strengthen īmān through worship: Keep ṣalāh on time, recite Qur’an, make daily duʿāʾ . Learn about tawḥīd (oneness of Allah): Know why shirk is dangerous and avoid superstitions (charms, fortune-telling). Keep good company: Be with people who remind you of Allah. Remember Allah’s mercy and punishment: Balance between hope and fear. Make constant tawbah : Even Prophet ﷺ made istighfār (seeking forgiveness) daily. 📖 Qur’an reminder: “Establish prayer, indeed prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.” (29:45)
2. Avoiding Sins Against Others These are sins that harm people (e.g., stealing, backbiting, disrespect). Practical Tips: Guard your tongue: Think before speaking — “Is it true? Is it kind?” Respect parents, teachers, and friends: Show gratitude and kindness daily. Be honest in dealings: Don’t cheat, lie, or take what isn’t yours. Resolve conflicts quickly: Apologise if you hurt someone. Do good deeds for people: Replace bad habits with service, like helping or giving charity. 📖 Prophet ﷺ reminder: “The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.” ( Ṣaḥīḥ al- Bukhārī , Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
3. Avoiding Sins Against Oneself ( ẓulm al- nafs ) These are sins that harm the soul and body (e.g., addictions, neglecting worship). ✅ Practical Tips: Build healthy habits: Sleep well, eat well, exercise. The body is an amānah (trust). Stay away from harmful environments: Don’t go where temptations are strong. Limit screen time & bad content: Protect eyes, ears, and heart. Set goals for worship: Like memorising short sūrahs , doing extra sunnah prayers. Make duʿāʾ for self-protection: Example – “ Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min sharri nafsī ” (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself). 📖 Qur’an reminder ( Duʿāʾ of Ādam ): “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.” (7:23)
