Major Environmental Problems of the World Lecture-2 Peter P. Debbarma Asst. Professor

What is Environmental Problems and Issues We can define environmental issues as the harmful effects of any human activity on the environment. Environmental issues are defined as problems with the planet's systems (air, water, soil, etc.) that have developed as a result of human interference or mistreatment of the planet. This includes both the biological and physical aspects of the environment.  Air pollution ,  water pollution , natural environment pollution, garbage pollution, etc. are some of the major environmental issues that are causing immense concern.

What are Environmental Concerns? Our Mother Earth is currently facing a lot of environmental concerns. The  environmental problems  like global warming, acid rain, air pollution, urban sprawl, waste disposal, ozone layer depletion, water pollution, climate change and many more affect every human, animal, and nation on this planet . Over the last few decades, the exploitation of our planet and the  degradation of our environment  has gone up at an alarming rate. As our actions have been not in favor of protecting this planet, we have seen natural disasters striking us more often in the form of flash floods, earthquakes, blizzards, tsunamis, and cyclones.

List of Major Environmental Problems 1 . Environmental Pollution ( Air, Water , Land & Noise ) 2. Environmental, Degradation & Depletion ( Ozone Depletion, Green house Effect) 3 . Environmental Waste (industrial, Plastic, solid, matter) 3 . Climate Change ( Global warming, Rain system, Acid Rain, frequent storms and unpredictable weather ) 4. Natural Disaster (Flood, Earthquakes, storms) 4. Biodiversity Loss ( habitat destruction, loss of flora anf Fauna 5 . Deforestation and Desertification 6 . Over-Population and Over extraction of Resources . 7 . Cultural Pollution and Human-Induced Disaster

1. Environmental Pollution Pollution  is the introduction of  contaminants  into the natural environment that cause adverse change .  Pollution can take the form of  chemical substances  or  energy , such as noise, heat, or light.  Pollutants , the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Pollution is often classed as  point source  or  nonpoint source pollution . In 2015, pollution killed 9 million people worldwide

1.2 Types of Pollution

1.3- Air Pollution

1.3. LAND-POLLUTION- Industrial, Bio-Medical waste, Solid waste, Plastic waste etc

1.4 Clean water crisis

1.5 Noise Pollution

1.6 Effects of Pollution

2. CLIMATE CHANGE- What are the pieces of evidence of Climate Change ? Evidence of Climate Change Sea level rise Global temperature rise Warming oceans Shrinking ice sheets Declining Arctic sea ice Glacial retreat Extreme natural events Ocean acidification Decreased snow cover Simple Definition Of Climate Change Climate change is the global phenomenon of climate transformation characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the planet (regarding temperature, precipitation, and wind) that are especially caused by human activities. As a result of unbalancing the weather of Earth, the  sustainability  of the planet’s  ecosystems  is under threat, as well as the future of humankind and the estability of the global economy.

2.1 GLOBAL WARMING Global warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature.

2.2 Causes global Warming

2.3 Mechanism of Global warming-GREEN- HOUSE EFFECT The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmosphere trap the Sun's heat. This process makes Earth much warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is one of the things that makes Earth a comfortable place to live.

2.4 Effects of Global warming- Ice Melting

2.5- effects of global warming SEA LEVEL RISE

2.6-SEA Level rise Consequences Sea Level-Submergence of Lowland areas, City, coasts and some countries

3 . Ozone Depletion- UV rays depletion skin cancer and other harmful radiations of the sun

4. Deforestation and Desertification

5. ACID RAIN

5.1 Acid Rain formation

6. Biodiversity Loss

6.1 Loss of Flora-Plants and Trees

6.2 Loss of Fauna- Animals and Extinction

7. Genetic Engineering

8. Over Population

8.1 Over-crowding

9. World Food Crisis

9.1

10. HUMAN RIGHT ISSUES

Hunger and Poverty-Inequality

11. WOMEN AND CHILD ISSUES
