Contn’d Major Ocean of The World Atlantic   Ocean . Arctic  Ocean . Indian  Ocean . Pacific  Ocean . Southern  Ocean .

Introduction 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean water. The oceans contain 97% of the earth’s water. All the oceans and seas are actually one continuous body of water.

Properties of Ocean Water Ocean water is a mixture of gases and solids dissolved in pure water. Oceanographers believe oceans contain all the natural elements on Earth. 85 of 90 have been found in the ocean.

Major Elements in the Ocean Ocean water is 96% pure water. Chlorine (1.9) and sodium (1.1) make up the next largest concentration of elements. Sodium chloride is table salt.

Major Ocean 1. Pacific   Ocean Area :  161.8 million km²

1. Pacific  Ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's oceanic divisions.  It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south. It is stretches by Asia and Australia in the west and the Americas in the east.

Major Ocean 2 . Atlantic   Ocean Area :  106.5 million km

2 . Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean  It stretches North, Central, and South America to the west and Europe, Asia, and Africa to the east . In total, 133 countries and territories border the Atlantic Ocean.

Major Ocean 3. Indian   Ocean Area :  77  million km

3. Indian   Ocean Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean in oceanic division with about 1/8 th of the total area of the sea. It is one of the world's major oceans, lying between Africa , India, and Australia. The Indian Ocean is named after India since at least 1515.

Major Ocean 4. Southern   Ocean Area :  20.33 million km²

4. Southern   Ocean The Southern Ocean, also known as the Antarctic Ocean or the Austral Ocean. it is regarded as the fourth largest of the five principal oceanic divisions. The country is bordered by the South Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean.

Major Ocean 5. Arctic   Ocean Area :  14.06 million km²

5. Arctic  Ocean. The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans . The International Hydrographic Organization recognizes it as an ocean, although some oceanographers call it the Arctic Sea.
