MAKING OF DIFFERENT KNOTS, BENDS AND HITCHES

MAKING OF DIFFERENT KNOTS, BENDS AND HITCHES Different types of knots and hitches are used in net fabrication, joining, mounting and mending of webbing besides in joining ropes and twines. Knots, hitches and bends are the connections commonly used in fishing for various purposes.

MAKING OF DIFFERENT KNOTS, BENDS AND HITCHES Bend is a knot for joining two lines together while hitch is a knot used to bend a line to a spar or other line. A knot is nothing more than a connection to the line itself or between two lines. It is a link that can be used to join lines of similar or dissimilar diameters and materials.

PARTS OF ROPE The  Standing Part  is the principal portion or longest part of the rope; The Bight  is the part curved or bent while working or handling; while The  End  is that part used in forming the knot or hitch.

KNOT A knot is a tie made by one end at some parts of its own body to make a loop or over some other object to get it fastened to it.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Overhand knot : It is formed by passing the end of the line over the standing part and through the eye. It is used for simple tying.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Reef knot : The reef knot consists of two overhand knots made consecutively by the ends of two different ropes and is used to tie together two ropes of equal size.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Bowline knot : A bowline knot is a reliable replacement of an eye splice. This knot is very useful and is the combination of a loop and a overhand knot combined in such a way that the loop does not slide.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Fisherman knot : This knot is a combination of two overhand knots, made separately by one twine over another so that they can slide together and get tightened when the twines are pulled resulting in a firm knot. Fishermen’s knot is mainly used to join two smaller ropes.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Single sheet bend knot : This is commonly called trawl knot . This is used to secure a rope’s end to a small eye. It is also used to bend a small rope to a larger one. It performs well with ropes and twines of different sizes and materials.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Double sheet bend knot : The principle of making double sheet bend knot is similar to that of single sheet bend knot. While making this knot, with the right hand, the end of the twine to the right is taken round the foundation loop twice instead of once as in single sheet bend knot. This is more secure and used as an alternative to the sheet bend knot.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Sheepshank : This knot is very much useful to make a weaker section of a rope to withstand the strain. It consists of two long bights on the rope and a half hitch over each end of the bights in the standing part of the rope and is used to shorten a rope. It is necessary to secure the two loops of the shank with toggles to prevent the slippage of the knot. This knot distributes the strain on the damaged part of the rope to three folded ropes and hence breakage of the rope is prevented.

TYPES OF DIFFERENT KNOTS Figure-of-eight knot : This knot is used to prevent rope from unreeving through an eye or a block.

BENDS Bends are not independently helpful in gear fabrication. They are integral part of knots and hitches.

HITCHES A hitch is made of a series of knots by which one rope is joined to another or made fast to some other object. OR Hitch is a series of folding (bends) made by a twine/rope around an object or over another twine in such a way that the series of such folding (bends) help to secure as a knot due to frequent repetitions. In many cases, hitches perform better than knots, particularly in lifting slippery objects.

TYPES OF HITCHES Clove hitch : It is made up of two half hitches with direction of second hitch reversed so that it secure as knot when tightened. It is used to secure a rope to a spar, guard rail and also for many other purposes. It is a most useful hitch to resist a sideways pull. This also likes rolling hitch but only two rounds to complete as shown in figure.

TYPES OF HITCHES Rolling hitch : It is used generally to resist a sideways pull. It is made like clove hitch with an intermediate round turn. Rolling hitch is used initially to mount a net with head rope by stapling method. It is also helpful in net braiding to start forming loops over foundation line.

TYPES OF HITCHES Two half hitches : Two half hitches are made to bend a line to a ring or spar or stanchion.

TYPES OF HITCHES Round turn and two half hitches : This is used to secure a heavy load to a spar or a ring. It will never join and can be cast off quickly.
