The Banaras Series: A Turning Point
It is most likely the most glorified piece of Manu Parekh, his Banaras series. The holy town, ghats,
ceremonies and unending spiritual flow were a strong source of inspiration. Banaras was to Parekh
merely a literal place, when it was figurative, a place of life, death and bestowal.
His representations of Banaras are not realistic but reflective accounts of emotions. His canvases are
dominated by bright reds, rich blues and burning yellows, which remind us of the intensity of devotion,
the drama of human life. The design of the temples, the running river Ganga, and the fires of the never-
ending worship are all represented in his semi-abstract works. These works represent the contradiction
of Banaras-joy and sorrow; life and death exist in perfect harmony.
Style and Techniques
The Manu Parekh artist is unique in the capacity to combine modernist spirit with the Indian traditional
motifs. His brushwork is strong, his colours saturated, and his forms highly symbolic as opposed to being
realistic. His use of abstraction is often not meant to isolate the observer but rather to bring them
further into the subject, into a more emotional reading of the subject.
His music tends to have contraries, light and shadow, holy and profane, peaceful and disorder, reflecting
the duality of human beings. Strong outlines and bright colours demonstrate how much he is attached
to the Indian folk and tribal styles, whereas the modernist style keeps his work in touch with the current
time.
