ABOUT CLASSICAL PERIODClassical music generally refers to
the art music of the Western
world, distinct from folk or popular
music traditions. It is characterized
by formality and complexity in its
musical form and harmonic
organization, often utilizing
polyphony and structured forms.
This genre has a rich history,
primarily rooted in the patronage
of churches and royal courts in
Western Europe, and has evolved
significantly over the centuries.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF CLASSICAL
MUSIC
1. Simple and Clear Sound
Music from this time sounds clean and easy to follow.
It usually has one main melody with a background accompaniment (called
homophony).
2. Balanced Melodies
Melodies were often even and balanced—for example, 4 bars of music followed by
another 4 bars that “answer” it.
Music had a strong sense of key (you could tell what the main note and chords were).

3. New Music Forms
The most important form was the sonata form, used in many symphonies and sonatas.
It has 3 main parts:
Exposition (introduces ideas)
Development (changes the ideas)
Recapitulation (brings the ideas back)
Another form used was rondo (A–B–A–C–A…), where one main theme keeps coming
back.

4. Instruments and the Orchestra
The orchestra got bigger during this time.
New instruments were added, like the clarinet.
Composers like Haydn and Mozart wrote music for orchestras with strings, woodwinds,
brass, and percussion.
5. Rise of the Piano
The piano became more popular and started replacing the harpsichord.
It could play loud and soft sounds, making the music more expressive.

6. Special Accompaniment Patterns
One common pattern was called the Alberti bass. It’s a broken chord played like this:
low–high–middle–high.
It was often used to make the music sound smooth and flowing.

PROMINENT COMPOSERS IN
CLASSICAL PERIOD
FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
(1732-1809)Over the course of his 106 symphonies, Austrian composer Franz
Joseph Haydn became the principal architect of the classical style of
music.
Franz Joseph Haydn was among the creators of the fundamental
genres of classical music, and his influence upon later composers is
immense. Haydn’s most celebrated pupil was Ludwig van Beethoven.
Franz Joseph Haydn was recruited at age 8 to the sing in the choir at
St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, where he went on to learn to play
violin and keyboard. After he left the choir, he supported himself by
teaching and playing violin, while studying counterpoint and
harmony.
Several important works of this period were
commissions from abroad, such as the Paris symphonies
(1785-1786) and the original orchestral version of "The
Seven Last Words of Christ" (1786).
Haydn is remembered as the first great symphonist and
the composer who essentially invented the string
quartet. The principal engineer of the classical style,
Haydn exerted influence on the likes of Mozart, his
student Ludwig van Beethoven and scores of others. FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
(1732-1809)
WOLFGANG AMADEUS
MOZART (1756-1791A prolific artist, Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart
created a string of operas, concertos, symphonies and
sonatas that profoundly shaped classical music.
He was a musician capable of playing multiple instruments
who started playing in public at the age of 6. Over the
years, Mozart aligned himself with a variety of European
venues and patrons, composing hundreds of works that
included sonatas, symphonies, masses, chamber music,
concertos and operas, marked by vivid emotion and
sophisticated textures.
Mozart died on December 5, 1791, at age 35. The cause of death is
uncertain, due to the limits of postmortem diagnosis.
At the time of his death, Mozart was considered one of the
greatest composers of all time. His music presented a bold
expression, oftentimes complex and dissonant, and required high
technical mastery from the musicians who performed it. His works
remained secure and popular throughout the 19th century, as
biographies about him were written and his music enjoyed
constant performances and renditions by other musicians. His
work influenced many composers that followed -- most notably
Beethoven. WOLFGANG AMADEUS

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
(1732-1827Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer whose
Symphony 5 is a beloved classic. Some of his greatest works
were composed while Beethoven was going deaf.
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German pianist and composer
widely considered to be one of the greatest musical geniuses
of all time. His innovative compositions combined vocals and
instruments, widening the scope of sonata, symphony,
concerto and quartet. He is the crucial transitional figure
connecting the Classical and Romantic ages of Western
music.
From 1803 to 1812, what is known as his "middle" or
"heroic" period, he composed an opera, six
symphonies, four solo concerti, five string quartets, six-
string sonatas, seven piano sonatas, five sets of piano
variations, four overtures, four trios, two sextets and 72
songs.
The most famous among these were the haunting
Moonlight Sonata, symphonies No. 3-8, the Kreutzer
violin sonata and Fidelio, his only opera. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
(1732-1827
Beethoven’s personal life was marked by a struggle
against deafness, and some of his most important
works were composed during the last 10 years of his
life, when he was quite unable to hear. He died at the
age of 56. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
