DAY 1
How do sound, lighting, and costumes contribute to creating the mood and atmosphere of a theatrical performance?
Today, we will learn about Properties of sound, theatrical, dance and visual elements Legends and Folklore of the Province
1. Sound Sound refers to vibrations that travel through a medium (like air, water, or solid objects) and are perceived by our ears. In the context of performance, sound includes elements like dialogue, music, sound effects, and ambient noise, all of which enhance the mood and emotions conveyed in the scene.
2. Theatrical Elements Theatrical elements refer to the components used in a performance to create a story and engage an audience. These include the script (dialogue), acting, costumes, props, lighting, sound, and set design. Together, these elements work to communicate the theme, characters, and emotions of the play or performance.
3. Dance Elements Dance elements refer to the components that make up a dance performance, which include movement, rhythm, space, time, and energy. These elements combine to express emotions, tell stories, or convey messages through physical expression. 4. Visual Elements Visual elements are components used in a performance, art, or media that rely on sight to convey meaning. In the context of theater and dance, these may include costumes, lighting, makeup, scenery, and visual effects that help create the overall atmosphere or mood of the performance.
5. Legends Legends are traditional stories or narratives that are often rooted in history but are embellished with supernatural or mythical elements. They are passed down through generations, usually orally, and are deeply connected to the culture, beliefs, and customs of a specific group of people or community.
6. Folklore of the Province Folklore refers to the collection of myths, legends, customs, beliefs, and traditional knowledge shared within a particular community or culture. Provincial folklore includes stories, rituals, and practices that reflect the history, values, and way of life of the people in a specific province, often expressed through storytelling, songs, dances, and art.
Properties of Sound, Theatrical, Dance, and Visual Elements In any performance, whether it’s theater, dance, or film, sound, theatrical elements, dance elements, and visual elements play a critical role in creating a complete experience for the audience. Let's break down each element:
1. Sound in Performance Sound in a performance includes everything we hear, from dialogue to background music to sound effects. In a theater, sound is used to enhance the emotional tone of a scene. For example, during a suspenseful moment, a gradual increase in music and eerie sound effects can create tension and keep the audience on edge. Story Example: Imagine a traditional Filipino theater performance where actors are telling a story about a mysterious mountain.
As the scene intensifies, the sounds of whistling wind, distant thunder, and howling wolves start playing, making the audience feel the eerie presence of the mountain. The sound doesn’t just accompany the action—it immerses the audience in the environment and heightens the emotional impact. 2. Theatrical Elements Theatrical elements in performance refer to the various components that come together to tell a story. These include costumes, props, lighting, acting, and sets. Each element works together to bring the world of the play or performance to life.
Story Example: In a Filipino stage play about the famous mythical hero Maria Makiling , the costumes would help depict the traditional Filipino attire of the characters, while the set design might include lush green mountains to reflect the mystical environment. The lighting would shift to highlight Maria Makiling’s presence at critical moments, casting shadows that create an air of mystery. Together, these elements help to set the scene and immerse the audience in the world of the story.
3. Dance Elements In dance, there are five essential elements: space, time, energy, body, and relationship. These elements help convey meaning, emotion, or even a story purely through movement. Story Example: In a traditional Filipino dance like Tinikling , dancers use rhythm (time) to step in and out of moving bamboo poles. The dancers' movements (body) and the coordination (relationship) between them convey a sense of unity and grace. The space between the poles and the dancers reflects the tension, and the energy in their movements shows both the difficulty and joy in mastering the dance.
These elements together make the dance captivating and meaningful. 4. Visual Elements Visual elements refer to everything that the audience sees. In theater and dance, this includes lighting, set design, costumes, and makeup. These elements help convey the mood of the scene, define characters, and establish the time and place of the performance.
Story Example: In a performance of “Swan Lake,” the lighting may be soft and dreamy for the magical scenes, while the set design reflects a dark forest where the story’s conflict unfolds. The costumes of the dancers—white for the swans—highlight their beauty and grace, while contrasting with darker costumes worn by the antagonist. The visual elements work together to tell the audience where they are and what emotions they should feel during each scene.

DAY 2
In what ways do legends and folklore help in preserving the cultural identity and traditions of a province?
Today, we will learn about Properties of sound, theatrical, dance and visual elements Legends and Folklore of the Province
1. Sound Sound refers to vibrations that travel through a medium (like air, water, or solid objects) and are perceived by our ears.
"The Legend of Mt. Banahaw " One of the most famous legends in the Philippines is that of Mt. Banahaw , a sacred mountain located in the province of Quezon. According to the legend, Mt. Banahaw is believed to be the dwelling place of powerful spirits, and it is said that the mountain holds sacred treasures that can bring good fortune to the faithful. The story goes that many years ago, a young couple named Liwayway and Dimas, who lived near the foot of the mountain, were deeply in love. They would often hike to the mountain to pray for blessings.
One day, while they were ascending the mountain, they encountered a beautiful fairy who offered them the mountain's treasures but warned them that only those who approach with pure hearts would be blessed. The couple, believing in the power of the spirits, followed the instructions and returned with spiritual wealth and prosperity. This legend, like many others, serves as a way to explain the mystique of the region and instill a sense of reverence for nature. The folklore of Mt. Banahaw is important in the province because it provides the community with a shared narrative of respect for nature and its mystical elements.
It also reflects the rich history and beliefs of the people living in the area. Story Example: "The Story of the Golden Carabao" In another provincial legend, the Golden Carabao of Pampanga tells of a powerful carabao (water buffalo) that was said to have the ability to transform into gold. According to the tale, the carabao helped farmers by plowing fields that were too difficult for regular animals to handle. In return for its kindness, the villagers would feed it and care for it. One day, the carabao asked for something in return: for the people to honor the land and their community.
The villagers agreed, and as a reward, the carabao transformed into a magnificent golden creature. It then ran into the mountains, leaving behind golden footprints as a reminder of its wisdom and the villagers' promise to protect the land. The Golden Carabao legend teaches the importance of respect for animals and nature, and its enduring message about living harmoniously with the environment continues to be shared throughout Pampanga. ________________________________________
In summary, the properties of sound, theatrical, dance, and visual elements all work together to enhance a performance, whether in a play, dance, or other artistic presentation. Similarly, legends and folklore of a province serve as a way to preserve the culture, history, and values of a community, often blending history, spirituality, and nature into fascinating stories that are passed down through generations.
1. What made the Golden Carabao different from other carabaos in the story? 2. What reward did the villagers receive from the Golden Carabao, and what was the condition for the reward? 3. Why did the Golden Carabao transform, and what did it leave behind as a reminder? 4. What moral lesson does the story of the Golden Carabao teach about living in harmony with nature? 5. “ Tiklos ” is a native peasant dance of Leyte. Very early in the morning, the leader of the tiklos beats the tambora , a kind of drum made from a hollow trunk of a tree with a carabao hide head. Next comes sounds of the subing (bamboo flutes) and the guimbala small snare drum with a head of a parchment made from the skin of a wildcat. The peasants come out with grass hooks, bols and other garden tools and farm implements. Led by the band, they march together to work in the fields.
During breaks the peasants enjoy themselves with tuba (a native wine) and the rest dance the tiklos accompanied by the subing (plawta), guimbal and tambora drums or when available, the “sista” played by the band.
