Martyrs of Portugal, - Verisimos, Maxima and Julia – under the persecution of Diocletian

T hese three siblings, the brother Verissimus and his two sisters were Martyred n the Roman Province of Lusitania (modern-day Lisbon, Portugal) during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian

The first known historical references to the three Saints is found in the 8th Century Martyrology of Usuard .

The faithful of Lisbon’s ancient devotion to the Martyrs is also attested in De expugnatione Lyxbonensi, an account of the Siege of Lisbon at the start of the Second Crusade in 1145.

the three siblings were in Rome when an Angel appeared unto them and told them to go to Olisipo, where they “would achieve the Crown of Martyrdom which they so eagerly sought .”

They journeyed by boat to the City and soon enough were arrested for being Christians and taken into the presence of Tarquinius, the Roman Governor under Diocletian.

Having voiced their will to uphold the Christian Faith even it be necessary to suffer Martyrdom therefore, Tarquinius subjected them to a series of torments . Finally they were stoned and their throats slit.

Their martyrdom is the theme of a series of paintings by Garcia Fernandes, in 1530 a.d.

the judge ordered that their bodies be thrown overboard into the sea tied to heavy stones, to erase any memory of them. However, the bodies returned to the beach before the rowers and the saints were buried by the crowd that went there to watch, strengthened in the faith by the courage of the saints and the miracle that had occurred

The cult of these martyrs remained of a local nature during the Roman and Visigothic periods, around the hermitage erected near their grave, in Campolide .

The Visigoth temple of the first half of the sixth century was possibly associated with a religious community with oblates 35 ,

according to the witness account of the English crusader Osberno, who participated in the capture of Lisbon in 1147, this temple was had been razed by the Moors.

the Swabian kingdom had been converted in 558 by the evangelizing work of St. Martin of Dume, but the cult of the Olisiponense martyrs remained confined to the city of Lisbon.

Hispanic religious unity, achieved in 587 with Reccared’s conversion to Christianity, was a crucial moment in peninsular history which fostered devotion to these saints

The invasion of islam, motivated the cult of these saints

This cult spread throughout Iberia and even into France.

The absence, in the sanctoral, of an office related to their cult also mirrors their marginal and popular character , and also illustrated by the diversity of the vernacular forms of Verissimus (Berisimo, Belisimo, Breixo, Vreixo and Bréixome)
