Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow's theory of basic human needs

INTRODUCTION: The basis of Maslow's theory is that human beings are motivated by unsatisfied needs, and that certain lower needs need to be satisfied before higher needs can be satisfied.

According to Maslow, there are general types of needs (physiological, safety, love, and esteem) that must be satisfied before a person can act unselfishly. He called these needs "deficiency needs

." As long as we are motivated to satisfy these cravings or interrest, we are moving towards growth, toward self-actualization. Satisfying needs is healthy, while preventing gratification makes us sick or act evilly.

Maslow’s Assumptions Human nature is basically good, not evil Normal human development involves the actualization of this inherent goodness

Psychopathology results from the frustration of a human being’s essential nature

Abraham Maslow ( 1908-1970)

Background Born April 1, 1908 Education City College of New York Studied Law Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology- 1930 Master of Arts Degree in Psychology – 1931 PhD Psychology- 1934

Description of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs Maslow’s theory is based on the idea that some needs, physical as well as psychological, take precedence over others. The needs are placed in a pyramid with the most important making the base

If the basic needs are not met, the base of the pyramid is not formed and the rest of the needs are not achieved. The first levels of needs are the deficiency needs, those that if not met cause a deficiency, or lack that motivates a person to achieve the need.

The fifth level, the actualization level, is a growth level. Few people ever reach the growth level and spend their lives going up and down the pyramid meeting the lower level needs.

Maslow’s Theory Maslow’s theory maintains that a person does not feel a higher need until the needs of the current level have been satisfied. Maslow's basic needs are as follows:

PHYSIOLOGICAL OR SURVIVAL NEEDS Air Water Food Clothing

shelter, sleep activity temperature

Safety and Security Protection Stability Pain Avoidance Routine/Order

Love and Belonging Affection Acceptance Inclusion

Esteem Self-Respect Self-Esteem Respected by Others recognition appreciation

Self-Actualization Achieve full potential Fulfillment
