ABRAHAM HAROLD MASLOW (APRIL 1, 1908 – JUNE 8, 1970) American psychologist Best known for creating Maslow's hierarchy of needs Promoted the concept of Self Actualisation Maslow was a psychology professor at 1. Alliant International University, 2. Brandeis University,  3. Brooklyn College,  4. New School for Social Research 5. Columbia University

Assumptions of Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory  Behaviour of people depends upon their need. Human behaviour can be changed or motivated by fulfilling their needs. Generally the needs follow the hierarchy i.e., starting from physiological need .   A satisfied need can no longer motivate a person; only next higher level need can motivate him.

Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory Physiological Needs Security / Safety Needs Social Needs Esteem Needs Self-actualisation Needs

Physiological Needs Physiological needs are the basic needs for sustaining human life. These needs include food, shelter, clothing, rest, air, water, sleep These basic human needs (also called biological needs) lie at the lowest level in the hierarchy of needs as they have priority over all other needs . These needs cannot be postponed for long . The management attempts to meet such physiological needs through fair wages.

Security / Safety Needs These are the needs connected with the psychological fear of loss of job, property, natural calamities or hazards, etc. An employee wants protection from such types of fear . Some of the basic security and safety needs include: Financial security Heath and wellness Safety against accidents and inj ury

SOCIAL NEEDS According to Maslow, humans need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance among social groups, regardless whether these groups are large or small. SOCIAL NEEDS INCLUDE : Friendship Intimacy Affection and love – from work group .family .friends

Esteem NEED Esteem needs are ego needs or status needs . People develop a concern with getting recognition, status, importance, and respect from others. Most humans have a need to feel respected; this includes the need to have self-esteem and self-respect . These Includes Achievement Mastery Independence Status Dominance Prestige Self – Respect

Self-actualization This level of need refers to what a person's full potential is and the realization of that potential . Maslow describes this level as the desire to accomplish everything that one can, to become the most that one can be . Individuals may perceive or focus on this need very specifically . Self – Actualization include : Mate Acquisition Parenting Utilizing Abilities Pursuing a goal Seeking Happiness Utilizing Talents

CRITICSM The needs may not follow a definite hierarchical order . The level of motivation may be permanently lower for some people . The pattern hierarchy of needs may not be applicable uniformly . Lack of direct cause and effect relationship between need and behaviour .
