Material Balance

Review of the knowledge Answer from students Define Matter ? What are different forms of matter?

Definitions Matter is any thing which can occupy some space and have mass. Quantity of matter in a substance is determined by its mass (Kilogram etc ) Different forms of matter are solids , liquid, gas.

Law of Conservation of Mass Mass can neither be created nor destroyed, However it can be converted from one form into another.

Mass in = Mass Out Material Balance is the balancing on all materials which are added to a reactor and all materials which are evolved/emitted. REACTOR Mass In Mass OUT

In a reaction Material added to a reactor and is either converted into a product, waste, by product or accumulated in the reactor. Therefor this can be written in the form of equation as follows Mass of Reactants = Mass accumulated + Mass as By product + Mass as Waste + Mass of product

If no material is wasted then Mass of Feed = Mass of Product F = P REACTOR Feed F Product P

For the Figure below Feed F = Product P + Waste W F=P+W REACTOR Feed F Product P WASTE

F = BP+W+P REACTOR F P Waste ByProduct BP

Question 1 Consider a reactor, in which 300 Kilograms of a medicine is produced from 400 Kilograms of raw materials, Calculate the waste from the reactor. Answer : Feed = 400Kg, Product= 300 kg, Waste = ? F = P+W 400 = 300 + W W = 400-300 = 100 So Answer = waste is 100 kilograms

Question no 2 By products from a reaction as of above question weighs equal to 45 kilogram, Find the waste, all other quantities are same . Answer: F=400, P=300, BP=45, W=? F=W+P+BP W=F-P-BP
