CLASSIFICATION OF CONVEX AND NON-CONVEX POLYGONS Presented by: Melissa C. Rodriguez MATHEMATICS 7

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: Differentiate convex from non-convex polygon Classify polygons whether they are convex or non-convex Draw a real-life representation of convex and concave polygons

TIME FOR BRAIN ACTIVITY

WHAT AM I? Look around the classroom and find the 3 hidden pictures. After finding the picture, the one who found the picture will tell what kind of picture, and what kind of polygon they found.

WHAT AM I? IRREGULAR PENTAGON REGULAR OCTAGON IRREGULAR DODECAGON

TASK QUESTIONS: How did you find the activity? How did you come up with your answer? 3. What are the other kinds of polygons aside from your answer?

TIME FOR BRAIN ACTIVITY

LET’S EXPLORE! UNLOCKING CONTENT VOCABULARY The class will be divided into 2 groups. Each group will perform the given task for 5 minutes and a group representative will present it afterwards. Each group will also create a unique name of the group and a yell.

Group 1 task Draw at least 2 real-life representations of a polygon with an interior angle that are less than 180°.

Group 2 task Draw at least 2 real-life representations of a polygon with at least one interior angle that is greater than 180°.

Task questions What insights did you get after doing the activity? Are there any difficulties you encounter? What do you think are the classification of polygons that you draw?

Key terms CONVEX AND NON CONVEX POLYGONS

For Group 1, the polygon where all interior angles are less than 180 degrees, and no vertices point inward is called Convex Polygon . In other words, a line segment drawn between any two points in the polygon will always lie inside or on the boundary of the polygon.

For Group 2, the polygon that has at least one interior angle greater than 180 degrees is called Non-Convex Polygon or Concave Polygon . This type of polygon has at least one vertex that points inward, and a line segment drawn between some points within the polygon may pass outside it.

SUBTOPIC 1: CONVEX AND NON-CONVEX POLYGON The following are example of Convex Polygon

SUBTOPIC 1: CONVEX AND NON-CONVEX POLYGON The following are example of Non- Convex Polygon

Questions to ponder • Which set of polygons are made of line segments? • Which set of polygons have vertices meet at their endpoints only? • Which set of polygons have interior angle that could measure more than 180 degrees? By your answers given, can you differentiate Convex from Non-Convex Polygon?

Role playing Ask 3 students to volunteer and make them act as interviewer and interviewees. Their topic is about the similarities and differences of Convex and Non-Convex Polygon. The students only have 5 minutes to act out, and the students will answer the questions that follows.

Task questions For the participant in the role play How were you able to successfully accomplished the activity? Do you acknowledge your classmates’ opinion that is against yours? For everyone Can you now differentiate Convex from Non-Convex Polygon?

Feedback time! Students will work individually and will write their answers using the platform Jamboard . https://jamboard.google.com/d/1FZ7MrKTbCi-Vkf3ZLLB7NBrN_ywfFnLbM8Aj1WlxbU4/edit?usp=sharing

Feedback time! 1. LEARNER’S TAKEAWAYS * Can you describe the distinguishing features of convex and non-convex polygons? * How do these features affect the shapes and properties of each type of polygon?

Feedback time! 2. REFLECTION ON LEARNING Think about your way of learning about convex and non-convex polygons. Did you encounter any challenges or misconceptions? How did you overcome them?

evaluation I. Classify each figure as Convex and Non-Convex Polygon. Write the classification beside the figure 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

evaluation II. Differentiate the Convex from Non-Convex Polygons using Venn Diagram. Place the correct word or phrase that describes the Convex Polygon on the right side and Non-Convex Polygon on the left side, then their similarities on the overlapping part of the circle. Choose the word or phrase from the box below. * ALL OF ITS INTERIOR ANGLES ARE LESS THAN 180° * AT LEAST ONE OF ITS INTERIOR ANGLES IS MORE THAN 180° * MADE OF LINE SEGMENTS * VERTICES MEET ONLY AT THEIR END POINTS * ALSO CALLED CONCAVE POLYGON

EVALUATION
