Relations and Function

GOOD MORNING CLASS!!!

ILLUSTRATING RELATION AND FUNCTION

OBJECTIVE

ACTIVITY

Relation - is any set of ordered pairs represented as ( x,y ) where x is the abscissa and y is the ordinate. Domain -is the set of all first coordinates or the abscissas . Range -is the set of all second coordinates or ordinates.

Examples: 1. {(2,0), (3,1), (4,2)} Domain: {2, 3, 4} Range: {0, 1 , 2} 2 . {( 1,1), (1,2), (2,3)} Domain: {1, 2} Range: {1, 2 , 3 }

Examples: 3 . {(4,0), (4,1), (4,2)} Domain: { 4 } Range: {0, 1 , 2 } 4. { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 } Not a relation because it is not a set of ordered pairs.

Function It is a relation in which every element in the domain ( x ) is mapped to exactly one element in the range ( y ). A set of ordered pair is a function if no distinct ordered pairs have equal abscissas or there are no repetition in the domain ( x ). NOTE: All functions are relations but not all relations are functions.

Examples: 1. {(0,2), (-1,3), (-2,4)} It is considered a function since no values of the abscissas are repeated. 2 . {(-2,2), (-2,3), (-2,4)} It is considered a relation but not a function since the value of the abscissa is repeated.

Questions?

Summary When can we say that a relation is a function ? Do all relations can be considered as functions?

“It is not good for a man to be alone”, so we learned the story of creation. Man needs others for survival just as others need him. No one can live independently, apart from each other. Each one of us is related to other people in many ways.

Directions : Illustrate the range and domain of the given set of ordered pairs and determine if it is a function or not. Set of Ordered Pairs Domain Range Function or Not 1. {( 2,2), (3,3), (4,4)}       2. {( 1,8), (8,1), (2,3)}       3. {( 9,10), (8,10), (-9,10), (6,10)}       4. {( 3,2), (4,4), (5,6), (6,7)}       5. {( 9,5), (8,5), (7,10), (6,10)}
