Tools for Measuring Rulers: for small things (usually in cm) Meter sticks: for bigger things (1 meter long) Measuring tapes: for long or curved things What tool would you use to measure your pencil?
How to Use a Ruler Place the ruler next to the object Start at the 0 mark Look where the object ends on the ruler That number is the length Can you find the 5 cm mark on your ruler?
Measuring in Centimeters Use centimeters for small things Examples: pencil, book, toy car Always start at 0 on your ruler What small object can you measure?
Measuring in Meters Use meters for big things Examples: height of a door, length of a room Use a meter stick or measuring tape How many meters long do you think our classroom is?
Let's Practice: Measuring Small Objects Get your ruler ready Measure these items in centimeters: Your pencil Your eraser Your notebook Which one is the longest?
Comparing Lengths After measuring, we can compare Which is longer? Which is shorter? Example: A crayon is 8 cm, a marker is 12 cm The marker is longer than the crayon Can you find two things and compare their lengths?
Estimating Before Measuring Guessing the length before measuring is fun Look at an object and guess its length Then measure to see how close you were What do you think is about 10 cm long?
Measuring Curved Objects Some things aren't straight Use a measuring tape for curved things Follow the curve as you measure Can you think of something curved to measure?
Converting Centimeters to Meters Remember: 100 cm = 1 m If something is 150 cm, it's 1 m and 50 cm 200 cm is the same as 2 m How many meters is 300 cm?
Measuring Distance Distance is how far apart things are We often use meters for distance Example: Distance from your desk to the door How many steps do you think it is?
Fun with Measuring: Scavenger Hunt Find something that is: About 5 cm long Longer than 20 cm but shorter than 30 cm Almost 1 meter long What did you find?
Measuring Your Height Stand straight against a wall Have a friend mark where your head reaches Use a measuring tape from the floor to the mark How tall are you in centimeters?
Measuring in Real Life Measuring is used every day Cooking: measuring ingredients Building: measuring wood or fabric Sports: measuring race times or jump lengths Where else do you see measuring?
Making a Paper Meter Get 10 strips of paper, each 10 cm long Line them up end to end How long is your paper meter? Can you use it to measure something?
Review: Meters and Centimeters Meters (m) for big things Centimeters (cm) for small things 100 cm = 1 m Always start at 0 when measuring What's your favorite thing to measure?
You're a Measuring Expert! You've learned about meters and centimeters You know how to use different measuring tools You can compare lengths of objects Keep practicing your measuring skills! What will you measure next?
Why Do We Measure? Measuring helps us understand size We use measurements to make things fit Measurements help us compare objects Can you think of a time when you needed to measure something?
Measuring with Your Body Your body can be a measuring tool Use your foot to measure floor space Spread your arms for bigger measurements How many hand-spans wide is your desk?
Measuring Round Things Round objects need special measuring Use a string or measuring tape Wrap it around the object Then measure the string with a ruler What round object would you like to measure?

Measuring Games: Guess the Length Look at an object and guess its length Write down your guess in centimeters Measure the object How close was your guess? What helps you make better guesses?
Creating Art with Measurements Use a ruler to draw straight lines Make shapes with specific sizes Create a picture using only squares and rectangles Can you draw a house that's 10 cm tall?
Measuring in the Kitchen Cooking uses lots of measuring Measure ingredients with measuring cups Some recipes use centimeters for size Why is measuring important in cooking?
