Volume is the amount of space taken up by a liquid, solid, or gas. The metric measurement for volume is the liter. Several instruments in science can be used to measure volume, including graduated cylinders, volumetric flasks, burettes, and pipettes. Graduated cylinders have marks on the side of the cylinder to determine the amount of liquid. Graduated cylinders can also be used to measure volume using displacement.
Micrometer Another instrument used to measure length is the micrometer screw gauge, or micrometer. The micrometer uses a small calibrated screw that is turned left or right to measure small lengths. The screw is adjusted according to the size of the item being measured.
Tape Measure A tape measure, also known as a measuring tape, is used to measure size or distance. A tape measure can be metal, plastic, or a strip of cloth with linear markings for measurement
Odometer An odometer is an instrument used to measure distance traveled by a vehicle, whether it is an automobile or bicycle.
Ruler The first tool that can be used to measure length is a ruler. A ruler can be made of metal, wood or plastic. A ruler has linear measurement markings.
Beakers are generally little more than glass jars with a small spout for pouring out the contents. Most beakers will have graduations marked on the outside, but they lack accuracy, and therefore, they should not be relied upon when precision is vital
Graduated cylinders are made specifically for measuring volume. Their markings on the outside allow for accurate measurements
Burettes, along with Pipettes, are part of a category of products known as volumetric glassware and are highly accurate when measuring volumes.
Common Units of Volume 1000 cubic millimeters (mm 3 ) = 1 cubic centimeter (cm 3 ) 1 cm 3 = 1 milliliter (mL) 10 mL = 1 centiliter (cL) 10 cL = 1 deciliter (dL) 1 dL = 100 milliliters (mL) 1000 cm 3 = 1 cubic decimeter (dm 3 ) 1 dm 3 = 1 liter (L)
10 dL = 1 L 1000 mL = 1 L 10 L = 1 dekaliter ( daL ) 10 daL = 1 hectoliter ( hL ) 1 hL = 100 L 1000 dm 3 = 1 cubic meter (m 3 ) 1000 L = 1 m 3 1000 L = 1 kL
