McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y What factors determine the style of leadership that managers use?
Theory X View their workers as lazy. Disliking work and unprepared to accept responsibility. Need to be controlled and made to work. Autocratic style of leadership
Theory Y Workers did enjoy work and that they found it as natural as rest or play. Prepared to accept responsibility. Creative and would take an active part in contributing ideas and solutions to work-related problems.
He does not suggest that there are two types of workers, X and Y. The attitudes of management to workers could, in extreme cases, be described by these two theories. Most managers have views somewhere between these two extremes.
The ‘best’ leadership style- it depends on many factors. Training and experience. Time The attitude of managers. The importance of the issues under consideration.
