measurement of the different body fluid compartments And their shortcomings
Total Body Water (TBW): TBW is the total amount of water in the human body. It can be measured using the dilution technique with radioactive tritium or deuterium as the indicator. These substances distribute into total body water. However, errors can occur if the indicator is not evenly distributed or if it is lost from. the body during the procedure
Extracellular Fluid (ECF): ECF composes of all body fluid outside the cells. It can be measured using the dilution technique with bromine-82 or mannitol as the indicator . However, bromine-82 also distributes into cells, and mannitol increases the extracellular fluid volume , which can lead to inaccurate measurements.
Plasma Volume: Plasma volume is the total volume of blood plasma. It can be measured by the dilution technique with albumin tagged with Evans Blue as the indicator . However, you need to adjust for a constant slow leak of albumin into the interstitial space .
Total Blood Volume: Total blood volume measures the amount of blood in your body. It can be measured using the dilution technique with 53Cr (chromium-53) labelled red cells as the indicator . Certain body conditions can affect the distribution and loss of indicator. For example, conditions that affect blood flow, such as heart failure, can affect the distribution of indicator.
Dilution techniques dye dilution methods In dye dilution method, a known amount of dye is added to the compartment, and the dye concentration in that compartment is measured after allowing sufficient time for uniform distribution throughout the compartment indicator dilution methods In indicator dilution method, a known amount of an indicator is added to a compartment, and the indicator concentration in that compartment is measured after allowing sufficient time for uniform distribution throughout the compartment
