What is Information?

- is a term that is frequently used and yet whose definition is taken for granted as understood - is composed of facts - it is the content of messages that are delivered through different media Information

In the context of Information Age ( also called Information Society) Information refers to digital information and is regarded as a commodity which can be stored, processed, transmitted, and received through computer data bases and networks. Information and knowledge are often used as synonyms, and this is wrong. The two have meanings different from one another.

Information can be seen as data that has been organized or processed in a way that adds context or meaning. It’s raw facts and figures that have been structured but not yet interpreted or fully understood. Information

Knowledge Knowledge goes a step beyond information. It encompasses the understanding, interpretation, and application of information. Knowledge is information that has been processed by the human mind through learning, experience, or instruction.

In his book Media Literacy, Potter (2014,18) explains that information is composed of facts, and facts by themselves is not knowledge.

Difference of Information and Knowledge Information piece-meal transitory Resides in the messages Gives something to the person to interpret Knowledge is structed, organized, and of more induring significance Resides in a person’s mind Reflect which has already been interpreted by the person

The idea of information is tied up with message, which is where the information resides.( Potter,18) It is argued that in the Information Age, the nature and function of knowledge has changed such that it can only survive if learning is translated into quantities of information( Lyotard 1997).

Thank you.
