Mediterranean Climate

What is Mediterranean Climate A Mediterranean climate or dry summer climate is also known as dry summers and mild, wet winters. The climate receives its name from the Mediterranean Basin , where this climate type is com mon. This Climate is having rain during the winter .

Where Is it located ? The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the Mediterranean Basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Southern Europe and Anatolia, on the south by North Africa, and on the east by the Levant. Mediterranean climate zones are typically located along the western sides of continents, between roughly 30 and 45 degrees north and south of the  equator . The coordinates are 34.5531° N, 18.0480° E.

Vegetation The native vegetation of Mediterranean climate lands must be adapted to survive long, hot summer droughts and prolonged wet periods in winter. Mediterranean vegetation examples include the following: Evergreen trees: bay laurel, pine, and cypress. Deciduous trees: sycamore, oak, and buckeyes. Fruit trees: olive, figs, walnuts and grapes. Shrubs: rosemary, Erica, Banksia, and chamise. Sub-shrubs: lavender, Halimium, and sagebrush.

Wildlife There are about 299 species of terrestrial reptiles, including five freshwater species and four marine species, of which almost 40 percent are endemic. The reptile fauna of the Mediterranean Basin includes snakes, lizards, tortoises and tropical relicts, including two species of chameleon.

How does the climate affect the environment The rates of climate change observed in the Mediterranean Basin has further exacerbated the existing environmental problems caused by land use changes such as urbanization and agricultural intensification, increasing pollution and declining biodiversity. The Mediterranean basin is a region of cultural and landscape richness, as well as exceptional diversity. Climate and environmental changes resulting from human activity in this region have accelerated for the last few decade. sea-level has risen and the water acidity is ongoing.
