MELAMINE FORMALDEHYDE BY : VINAY

- Amino type resin - REACTANTS METHODS OF PREPARATION

Preparation of melamine formaldehyde resin is two step process :- S tep-1 : Resinification reaction between melamine and formaldehyde * depend on - melamine to formaldehyde molar ratio - pH of the medium * it leads to formation of mixtures of water soluble methylol melamine *Depending on the prevalent rxn conditions , methylol up to six methylol groups per molecule (i.e. Melamine is potentially hexafunctional) may be obtained. Step-2 : Polycondensation reactions ultimately form methylene bridges between melamine groups in a rigid network structure results in cross linking.

Commercial resinification- R eactor used : jacketed still fitted stirrer and reflux condenser type reactor Initial molar ratio of M:F :: 1:3 pH = 8-8.5 by using Na₂CO₃ Methylolation is done at temp 80-85⁰C for 2hrs. Melamine goes into solution and form methylol derivatives. Commercial Preparation :

Cooling solution yield polymer in latex form which will stabilized by adding borax (pH regulator) and increases shelf life of just few days to several months ... Commercially , resin is condensed to a point close to hydrophobe point or converted into moulding powder , before preceding with final cure.

DIFFERENT DERIVATIVES OF METHLYLOL GROUPS

POSSIBILITIES OF REACTION BETWEEN DIFFERENT METHYLOL GROUPS

CROSS LINKING REACTION -Heating at 150˚c or by any external catalyst

Better heat resistance than PF & UF. less water absorption power . better cracking resistance than UF & PF . Good stain resistance towards fruit juices and beverages. Available in wide range of colours . Good insulation character (up to 373 k) at both damped and elevated temperatures . PROPERTIES

Solubility : solubility in hydrocarbon improve by adding butanol instead of methanol. High surface hardness . better scratch resistance. but expensive than UF And PF . MF Resin may be used as adhesives , in coating applications , kitchen, and as decorative papers.

STAIN RESISTANCE BETTER LESS WATER ABSORPTION POWER DUE TO WIDE RANGE OF COLOUR KITCHEN UTENSILS

Advantages More durable than UF, lower formaldehyde emissions , high tack with low viscosity (important for fiberboard), cure over a wide range of pH Disadvantages More expensive than UF, less durable than PF. ADHESIVE

By using butanol instead of methanol which is a flexible group solubility and compatibility with hydrocarbons improve helps in coating applications . MODIFICATION FOR COATING APPLICATIONS

Available in wide ranges of colour DECORATIVE SIGNS AND LAMINATES
