INTRODUCTION POULTRY FARMING is the raising of domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks etc. for the purpose of farming meat or eggs for food Poultry are farmed in great numbers with chickens being the most numerous More than 50 billion chickens are raised annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs Chickens raised for eggs are usually called layers while chickens raised for meat are often called broilers
DIVISION OF POULTRY INDUSTRY HATCHERY SECTOR: Back bone of poultry industry. Eggs are placed in incubators for 21 days and day old chicks sold to the farming sector. Its establishment requires significant investment POULTRY FARMING SECTOR: Rearing of poultry birds / chicks for meat and eggs is classified as poultry farming. It is labor intensive and requires investment for working capital mainly for the purchase of feed, chick, vaccination, etc.

SHEDS MANUAL SHED (60 days process): These shed are based on manual feeding and vaccination Less cost oriented and have disadvantage of time to time vaccination and feeding Diseases have higher ratio and casualty ratio is also higher in manual sheds. On average, chicks affected in manual is 100
SHEDS CONTROLLED SHED (35 days process): These sheds are highly equipped and have accurate timing in feeding and vaccinations though its cost is higher but having less casualties and weather diseases may not affect on higher ration but if one disease effect in any control shed it may be spread over to whole shed. Chicks are usually affected from diseases to 10 to 15.
FEED for RAISING MEAT BIRDS Just like you needed different food when you were a baby, a chicken has different nutrient needs at the different stages of her life. Provide broiler starter with a protein level of 20 to 24 percent from the point of hatching to THREE weeks of age. After that, switch your meat chickens to broiler finisher (16 to 20 percent protein) until the birds are sent to be slaughtered.

DISTRIBUTION ARTHI (Middle man) In order to sell the birds to the end users, a middle man ( Arthi ) is involved. The birds are not sold directly to the retailers through poultry producers. Arti performs distribution activities in the poultry market, he follows PPA (Pakistan Poultry Association) daily rates, buys in bulk quantity from the poultry producers and sells to wholesalers/retailers.

CHALLENGES & RECOMMENDATIONS Higher rates of poultry feed and chicks are the main problems for the poultry industry. For these reasons, broiler meat is being supplied at high rates to people. A round 23,000 poultry farms had been closed down due to these problems . Special grants and interest free loans to be given to small commercial poultry farmers whose establishments have been destroyed .
CHALLENGES & RECOMMENDATIONS Import duties upon the import of feed additive, pharmaceutical products and equipment be withdrawn. Poultry industry presently be declared a calamity hit industry. Electricity tariff for the poultry farms should be the same as to other industrial units.
