AN ORAL PRESENTATION ON STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) PROGRAMME HELD AT OYO STATE MINISTRY OF HEALTH, DEPARTMENT OF FOOD, WATER AND LABORATORY SERVICES MAGAZINE ROAD, JERICHO IBADAN, OYO STATE BY: A B U LATAN T A I W O D A M I L OLA MATRIC NO: B c h / 2 1 8 / 1 2 2 7

OUTLINE BRIEF HISTORY OF FOOD,WATER AND LABORATORY SERVICES DEPARTMENT LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF WATER PHYSICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER

BRIEF HISTORY OF FOOD, WATER AND LABORATORY SERVICES DEPARTMENT The department was formally known as a public health laboratory established in 1947 It was under the department of health care and disease control In 2011, the department was separated from public health care laboratory and stand as a whole. The department deals with the quality control of food, water and water related product and regulation of what people consume in the state.

LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF WATER Laboratory analysis is an analysis that is carried out on food or water sample to know if the sample is either physically, chemically or bacteriologically fit for human consumption.

PHYSICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER Physical analysis of water sample is the easiest and most rapid laboratory analysis. It is used to reveal the physical appearance of water sample such as colour change, presence of extraneous materials and cloudiness of water It is a test that is carried out according to the physical appearance of water sample

MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER Using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method of analysis The MPN method looks for the presence of target pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia Coli) in water due to contamination of the water supply in other to be fit for drinking MATERIALS USED: MacConkey broth, Brilliant green bile broth, Beakers, Measuring cylinder,

Cont’d Bursen burner, Pipette, McCartney bottles Incubator, inoculating loop, Deionized water, Weighing balance, Durham tube, and Autoclave.

PROCEDURE Preparation of MacConkey broth(single strength & double strength) Autoclaving or sterilization Inoculation Incubation Observation Observe the color of the MacConkey broth, positive test turns the color from purple to light yellow Observe for bubbles at the upper end of the inverted Durham tube ,positive test shows bubble of Carbondioxide from the respiring microbes in the inoculums

CONCLUSION The SIWES program gave me the opportunity to understand some of the underlying principles of Biotechnology which I have been taught in class. I have been exposed to working conditions in a standard working environment and how to follow due process in the running of a laboratory.
