Mobile Number Portability Seminar by Vipul MIT PUNE Seminar Guide

Agenda What is Mobile Number Portability? Its type and related basic definitions. Routing algorithms to implement MNP MNP’s effect on economy and telecom sector Future Scope Conclusion regarding MNP technology 1

Introduction What is Mobile Number Portability? It enables the subscriber to switch between services, locations and operators while retaining the original number. This scheme provides freedom and convenience for customers to get the best services. MNP is abbreviation of Mobile number portability. Mobile Number Portability 2

Types of MNP 1.Operator Portability :- From one operator to another e.g. BSNL TO IDEA ,AIRTEL TO VODAFONE and vice-versa etc. 2.Location Portability :- From one location to another 3.Service Portability :- From one service to another e.g. prepaid to postpaid. Mobile Number Portability 3

MNP Guidelines A mobile number can be ported only if it is still in operation. Pre-paid, GSM , CDMA numbers shall be portable. However, any credit on the card will be lost. Calling Line Identification Presentation (CLIP) shall be portable. Connected Line Identification Presentation shall be portable. Each company or operator should provide the routing arrangements needed to port the mobile number. Once you port the your number you can not port it to another operator within 90 days. Process should follow the rules and regulations announced by the TRAI i.e. Telecom Regulatory Agency of India. Mobile Number Portability 6

Components of MNP Central Reference Database (CRDB):- The CRDB is the database where the ported numbers are stored and take care of the network update and administration message flow between the various operators. CRDB can be active or passive: Active: Store, distribute and validate message Passive: Store only. Mobile Number Portability 7

How MNP works Internally ... Technical solutions and routing algorithms used to implement the MNP 1. IN Based Solutions :- Onward routing Call drop Back Query on release All call Query 2. Signaling Relay 3. Number Portability Clearing house Mobile Number Portability 10

Onward Routing Figure: Onward Routing Mobile Number Portability 11

Advantage:- No centralized database needed Internal NPDB can be stand alone and contains only the ported number from the donor network. Good solutions for short term or if a small percentage of subscribers chooses to do number portability. Disadvantage:- Completely relies on donor network during call setup. Requires setting up two call segments. Advantages and Disadvantages Mobile Number Portability 12

Call Drop Back Mobile Number Portability Figure: Call Drop Back Solution 13

Advantages :- Centralized number portability database not needed. Internal NPDB can be stand alone and contains only ported number from donor network. Disadvantages:- Involves the donor network during call set up. Circuits are reserved temporarily during call setup. Advantages and Disadvantages Mobile Number Portability 14

Figure: Query on Release Query on Release Mobile Number Portability 15

Advantages : Centralized number portability database used for call routing decisions. Disadvantages : Involves the donor network during call set up. Circuits are reserved temporarily during call setup. Advantages and Disadvantages Mobile Number Portability 16

All Call Query Figure: All Call Query Mobile Number Portability 17

Advantages: Centralized number portability database used for call routing decisions. Does not involve the donor network. Efficient in usage of switch, port and circuits. Good long term solution, especially when most subscribers choose number portability . Disadvantages : Relatively high portability set up cost. High traffic to NPDB from originating switches . Advantages and Disadvantages Mobile Number Portability 18

Figure: Signaling Relay Solution 2.Signaling Relay Mobile Number Portability 19

Advantages: This solution utilizes a standard interfaces and signaling functions in order to minimize the need for further system development. This solution supports speech, fax, data, short-message service, call-back when subscriber is no longer busy and optimally routed calls. Disadvantages : This solution is very specific for GSM. This solution is not applicable to other mobile network technology such as CDMA. Advantages and Disadvantages Mobile Number Portability 20

3.Number Portability Clearinghouse Mobile Number Portability Figure: NP Clearinghouse 21

Advantages: Elimination of reliance on the donor Service provider, thereby providing the ability to maintain portability when Service providers fail and exit the market. Optimized routing, and the resulting elimination of the costs of additional conveyance, will serve as an inducement to win end users, fostering competition. Disadvantages: Since this solution is newly introduced in some countries, therefore this may be considered as disadvantages, because of unawareness of solution. Statistical Analysis of MNP Mobile Number Portability 24

Future Scope and Conclusion The success of the implementation of MNP would depend on a number of factors including Porting Time: Porting Fees: Better Price Deals: MNP allows effective utilization of numbering resources, as one customer is bound to his mobile number for longer time. So, if above points are taken into consideration there is better future for this technology in India. Mobile Number Portability 25
