Plot Construction.I Hughie Erskine- The young man with everything except money, wants to marry Laura. All his business adventures – six months’ Stock Exchange, A tea-merchant tired of pekoe an souchong , Selling dry sherry. Laura’s father don’t want to marry his daughter to a person facing economic crisis . 6

Plot Construction.II Under depression Hughie visits his friend Alan Trevor, who is painter by profession. When Hughie enters the studio of Trevor, he finds a beggar standing in a corner as a model of Trevor’s portrait. Subsequently, there is a discussion upon the wage of the model and earning of the painter from the picture. Mentioning that, ‘he wants it more than I do’ Hughie slipped a sovereign into the beggar’s hand 8
Plot Construction.III Few days later when Hughie visits Trevor, Trevor reveals that the beggar model was actually a millionaire( Baron Hausberg ), one of the richest people around. He show interest in love story of Hughie and Laura. Hughie feels himself utterly stupid but due to his generous behavior Baron returns his sovereign with a wedding present in the form of a cheque for 10,000 pounds. 9
The Character of Hughie Erskine. Having every accomplishment except that of money making. He had tried at 1. Stock Exchange 2. Been a tea merchant, 3. selling dry sherry but of no use. He is in love Laura Merton, daughter of a retired Colonel who has lost his temper and digestion in India. The Colonel put a condition of ten thousand pounds for the hand of his daughter. 10
