Introduction :- The resources that are derived from the environment are called as natural resources. Some of them are most essential for our living while most of them are used for satisfying our needs. Common examples are air, sunlight, water, soil, stone, plants, animals and fossil fuels. They are finite & can’t be replenished once they are depleted.
Classification :- On the basis of exhaustibility, it may be classified into two types :- Renewable resources :- These are generated from natural sources i.e, sun ,wind ,rain , tides and can be generated again and again as and when required. Solar energy ,wind energy,Geothermal energy,Tidal energy are the examples of renewable resources. Non-renewable resources :- These are the resources that can’t be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption. Fossil fuels ,natural gas ,oil and coal are the examples of non-renewable resources.
Types :- They are mainly of 6 types : Forest Resources Water Resources Mineral Resources Food Resources Land Resources Energy Resources
Conservation of natural resources :- Conservation is the proper management of a natural resource to prevent its exploitation ,destruction or degradation. As the human population is growing continuously, the consumption of natural resources is also increasing. With the increase of industrialisation and urbanisation of the modern human society, the use of all these resources is increasing day by day. If these resources are not properly managed and used, there will be a serious scarcity of these resources. So, we need to conserve the natural resources.
Why should we conserve natural resources ? As we know that nature provides all the basic needs which are necessary to us ,but we are overexploiting or overusing these resources. If we go on overexploiting the nature, there will be no more resources available in the future. So there is an urgent need to conserve the nature. Meanwhile ,it is clear that nonrenewable resources are in danger of running out. Here are some needs : To maintain ecological balance for supporting life To preserve different types of biodiversity To preserve the natural resources for the present and future generations
Some ways to conserve natural resources that we should do right now :- There are several ways to conserve natural resources. Here are some easy and simple ways that we can help protect the planet. Practice Recycling :- Recycling is a great starting point if we want to reduce our carbon footprint. We can recycle tons of items from paper products, cartons and glass. Use energy-efficient light :- Switch the light bulbs to energy saving ones to reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint. Choose Reusable goods :- Reusable products can be a huge hassle to use, but they play a major role on reducing the waste that goes in to ocean and land forms. Bring reusable tote bags when we are out shopping.
Turn off the water when not in use :- Make sure to turn off the tap when we are not using water. By turning off the water tap when not in use, like while brushing teeth, washing utensils or while bathing, we can save up to 35% of water . Conserve energy at home :- If there is sufficient ventilation at home, then switch off the fans and do not use Air Conditions.Switch off the lights at day time, and use lights only wherever required. Avoid non-Recyclable packaging :- As a consumer, we can help out by avoiding products made with non-recyclable packaging like single-use plastics and styrofoam.
Use less paper :- Paper is an necessary part of everyday life, so it’s impossible to go paperless ,unless we completely commit to an all-digital lifestyle. The habit of buying new notebooks when the old ones that are still useable. Eat less meat :- Eating less meat can help reduce pressure on forests and land used to grow animal feed . Eating less meat means eating foods that are plant-based rather than those that are animal-based.
The 3R’s to save environment :- The three R’s to save the environment are Reduce , Recycle and reuse. Reduce :- Means using less of natural resources and avoiding wastage of natural resources. Reuse :- Means using things again and again like the plastic bottles in which we buy jams, pickles etc can be again used for storing things in the kitchen. Recycle :- Means the material like paper, plastic, glass, metals etc used for making things can again be used for making new things instead of synthesising or extracting new paper, plastic, glass or metals.
Management of natural resources :- All the things, we use and consume are obtained from natural resources. Due to increase in population, industrialisation and urbanisation the demand for natural resources is increasing and their availability is limited. So there is a need for proper management of natural resources. The proper management of natural resources consists of :- Judicious use of natural resources and avoiding wastage of natural resources. Long-term planning for the use of natural resources so that it last not only for the present but also for future generations. The exploitation of natural resources should not be for the benefit of a few people but should be distributed equally for all. While extracting and using natural resources we should also plan for the safe disposal of wastes and avoid pollution so that no damage is caused to the environment.
Conclusion :- If we conserve resources, we save energy and thereby save the environment. Although it may not be obvious, there is a direct connection between energy use and the environment. When we consume less power and fewer resources such as water, we reduce the amount of toxic fumes released by power plants, conserve the earth’s natural resources and protect ecosystems from destruction. This is important for life , ours now and that of future generations.
