Introduction
The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) is the
nodal agency in the administrative structure of the
Central Government for the planning, promotion
and co-ordination
The Ministry also serves as the nodal agency in the
country for the
United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP),
South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme
(SACEP),
International Centre for Integrated Mountain
Development (ICIMOD)

Objective
Ministry oversees the implementation of India's
environmental and forestry policies and
programmes.
While implementing the policies and
programmes
Ministry is guided by the principle of
sustainable development and enhancement
of human well-being.

Sustainable development (SD)
Sustainable development (SD) is the
development that meets the needs of
present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own
needs.

Programmes
1.National River Conservation Plan
2.EcomarkScheme of India (ECOMARK) -EcomarkLabelling
3.National Afforestation Programme: A Participatory Approach to Sustainable
Development of Forests
4.National Action Programmeto Combat Desertification

Role
Conservation of the country's natural resources
by implementing policies related to --
Lakes and rivers,
Biodiversity, forests and wildlife,
Welfare of animals,
Prevention of pollution

Duties of MoEF
Conservation and survey of flora, fauna, forests and
wildlife
Prevention and control of pollution
Afforestation (the process of planting trees, or
sowing seeds, in a barren land devoid of any trees
to create a forest ) and regeneration of degraded
areas
Protection of the environment and
Ensuring the welfare of animals

At the National level, the organization includes
Director General of Forests
Special Secretary to the Government of India
