Types of monitors Monitors are classified based on technology that they use to display images. 1. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). 2. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). 3. Thin Film Transistor (TFT).

CRT Monitor CRT monitor is an economical monitor used on most systems. The CRT monitor displays images with colors that are consistent and can be viewed comfortably from different angles. CRT monitors are available with curved or flat screens.

Classification of CRT monitors Monochrome monitors. Gray – scale monitors. Color monitors.

Monochrome monitor Monochrome monitor displays the image on the screen using only one color on a background of a color such as black or white. Mono means one. These monitors display images using one color such as green, orange or white. These monitors are cheaper. Black & White Monitor

Gray – scale monitor It is like a black and white television. It displays the image on the screen using different shades of gray. These monitors can display both text and graphics that do not require much processing.

Color Monitors The color monitor is like a color television that displays the image in a variety of colors. These are used to display colorful graphics and animations.

LCD Monitors Liquid Crystal display monitors.. The LCD monitors are thin and occupies less space. These are light in weight and consumes less power. The picture on the LCD monitor reduces eyestrain. LCD screens used in laptops and microwave Ovens. LCD monitor is available for desktop computers also.

TFT Monitors Thin Film Transistors. It is a latest technology using in LCD monitors. In this technology a separate tiny transistor is used for each pixel on the display. The size of each transistor is very small.TFT monitor displays sharp text, excellent color and multimedia applications.

Structure of TFT TFT viewing angles are in the range +-30 to +-70 degrees. TFT has a sandwich like structure with liquid crystal filled between two glass plates.TFT glass consists of various TFTs. Colors are generated by the color filter which is the part of the color filter glass. TFTs are actually the number of pixels displayed on the screen.

Pixel A pixel is the smallest element that display on monitor and software can manipulate to create letters, numbers, or graphics. A pixel is also called a pel . It is a picture element, one spot in a rectilinear grid of thousands of such spots that form an image produced on the screen by a computer.

Characteristics of the monitors Size. Resolution. Antiglare screen.

SIZE Size of the monitor specifies the length of the monitor in inches. Monitors are available generally ranging from 14 inches to 22 inches.

Resolution Arranging no of pixels on the screen to change the quality of picture. The greater the number of dots per inch, the better the resolution. The resolution of the monitor is measured using two numbers. First number specifies the number of dots displayed on a single line of the screen. The second number specifies the number of lines on the screen. The basic resolution of the monitor is 640x480. 640 dots on each line and 480 lines. High resolution displays more information and low resolution shows less information. It varies one monitor to an other monitor.

Monitor settings Brightness. Contrast. Horizontal size. Vertical size. Horizontal position. Corner correction. Trapezoid correction. Pots. Vertical position. Degauss. Language.

VGA card Visual Graphics Adapter. It is responsible to display the images on the monitor. VGA cable used to connect the monitor to the computer through the VGA or monitor port.

Trouble shooting

Antiglare screen The monitor screen gives out bright light, also acts like a mirror that reflects light. Can see the reflection tube-light and bulb on the screen which may strain your eyes. TFT monitors have built –in antiglare screen.
